I tried one of those home highlighting kits last night and the results were disasterous!! Base colour is good but highlights are blocky, uneven and brassy. Phoned the Loreal helpline who advised a wash in toner in a darker colour which I've just done with no effect. Can I redye my hair again today with the original base colour (this time leaving out the highlights!)?? Help!!!

colouring your hair again will only damage it so wait a few days for it to get a bit stronger again cos now its very weak...you can wear a hat in the meantime

Home highlighting kits never work. This is always the result, I'm afraid, whatever the cosmetics companies will tell you.

You should redye your hair, but I agree with the person above who says wait a few days if you can. Use a gentle all-over permanent dye as close as possible to your natural or base colour.

The other problem with redyeing immediately, as well as damaging your hair, is that you might find that the chemicals in the new dye react with the highlighter bleach, leaving your highlights a very strange greenish colour.

I am pretty sure this would be worse than what you have now, so please do give it a few days if you can!

Well dying over and over is not good for your hair, but no one wants a horrible dye job. What I would do is go to a nice salon (not a cost cutters or other walk-in only place) and see what they can do to fix it. I would also recommend being prepared to lose some length. The only way to get the horrible highlights out and your hair to be healthy is by cutting them out. What my hairdresser does when this happens is to blend the highlights with a new base and cut off 2-3 inches every month for the next few months so you will have healthy hair within a year.

Good Luck!

Color does not fix color. I would suggest a trip to the salon so they can evaluate the condition of your hair and treat it accordingly. You might be stuck with your not perfect color for a little while - but a good stylist will get you there without ruining your hair. My hair was black & red last year and now i'm a full blonde. My stylist color corrected my hair and toned it (it was a little orangey for a while) but got me to where I wanted to be and kept my hair in great condition the whole time. It only took a few months but with your situation it shouldn't take that long. Since dye in home kits is less effective at keeping color than salon quality dye you may be able to strip it out easily. I do recommend at least asking a stylist in your area and getting their opinion.

you probably didn't go dark enough, that's why it didn't correct anything. if you dye or bleach your hair too many times, in a short time period, you'll end up with a green haze .I'd wait a few days or even a week, then go to the darkest color you would like, (no high lite stuff). that should take care of the mess.

use a semipermanent color over it in a color lighter than the base color but darker than the hilite color.

your base color was too dark or the volume of developer wasn't high enough or you didn't leave it in long enough.

I would go to a salon. You dont want to risk messing your hair up anymore. They will know what to do.
