I have a two yr old minidoxie and this a.m. when i was rewinding a video tape and the machine made a high pitched whining noise as it neared the beginning of the tape my sleeping doxie jumped off the couch and went into a convulsion, vomiting and loose bowels.........she seems fine now, but it scared both her and me a lot!!!! I know that dogs have a higher sense of sound and i'm thinking that this is what might have happened.......anyone else have a similar experience or reaction with their dogs? Thanks.........S.T. Ohio

Sounds like your dog had the equivalent of a grand mal seizure, one of the nastiest. All they know about seizures is that they occur because of misfiring neural pathways between the 2 halves of the brain. What causes this to happen is unknown, but some things can trigger fits in susceptable people and animals but the triggers arent the same for everyone. Some fits are one offs and some happen with regularity. Most people and animals that have multiple fits over their life usually have them from birth. Flashing lights, certain pitch noise, blood pressure and certain smells can cause fits for an epileptic. But some fits have no known cause and they usually only happen once. Miniature daschunds, dobermans, german shepards and some of the over bred toy breeds are susceptable to epilepsy. Just watch your dog and make sure she doesnt lose weight, her brain is function properly and she doesnt fit again. If any of this happens definately take her to the vet.
