Is your goal to make people laugh? When you ask people if they want to hear a joke, they are immediately on guard, and there is pressure for them to laugh. On the other hand, if you throw in something funny in the convo when they are not expecting it (which is the mechanism that makes people laugh- an unexpected comment- you'll have more success.

Remember the joke well so you don't mess the punch line up. Tell the joke to a few close friends first to see if they find it funny. Heres an easy one to remember:
A man joins a big corporate empire as a trainee.
On his very first day of work, he dials the pantry and shouts into the phone - "Get me a coffee, quickly!"
The voice from the other side responded, "You fool you've dialed the wrong extension! Do you know who you're talking to, dumbo?"
"No," replied the trainee.
"It's the CEO of the company, you fool!"
The trainee shouts back, "And do YOU know who YOU are talking to, you fool?!"
"No." replied the CEO indignantly.
"Good!" replied the trainee, and puts down the phone.

Practice telling the jokes until you are very confident in your delivery and timing. The worst thing is listening to someone who is hesitant or forgets crucial bits of the joke.
The time spent practicing will be well worth it later. You might also try writing the joke out to help you remember it.

Well, try not laughing while telling the joke. It makes people less inclined to listen to the joke.
