There should definitely be consequences...but not a slap. It also depends on your definition of "rude". Everyone's is different. I have witnessed rude kids that I would DEFINITELY discipline, and their parents did nothing.
My daughter is just a baby so I have no experience (yet) with disciplining my own child. I can say however that I was clipped a few times as a kid. But only a few; I was taught not to be rude to begin with so it was rare that my punishment got that far. I had the fear and that was enough.
Choose effective consequences (other than slapping), be firm and consistent.

Slapping and a spanking are two different things. A swat on the butt, I personally agree with. But slapping, and other physical punishments are WRONG. A spanking should be so rare that it makes an impression and the offense should warrant it. When I hear the word slap, I think open hand across face and THAT, should send someone to jail.

Slapping is very demeaning. Also, how does that teach a child not to be rude when the parent acts rude beyond measure by slapping?
You teach by modeling your best behavior, having clear expectations, and logical, non-violent consequences. (Hitting lowers the iq after all!)

If they don't listen when i say to stop doing or acting that way I would eaither spank the butt or slap the hand depending on what they are saying. No if they are of an age that they know better and do it because they think it is funny i might tap them on the mouth. My mom did and i am fine.
