You need to find a dentist and staff that will take a look at your entire dental health, and that is caring and will take the time to make you comfortable. Once you start going and get into the routine, you will not be so nervous about going, you may even enjoy it. Alot of people are scared of the dentist and that is because they have no knowledge of dentistry. Take the time to research what the dentist recommends for you they should even have pamphlets of each procedures. It will help you if you know the reason for each procedure and how it is done. Look for a office that is updated in technology, they will have better pain free dentistry methods than those who are still stuck in the 80's. But beware of any Heartland Dental Care offices they are all about making money and not about the pt's. Take that from a dental hygienist ;) Good luck

How often do you go ? if you only go when you need a filling etc then you will never get over your fear
I hate the dentist but now i go every 3 months and have a check up scale and polish I haven't had to have a filling or anything done for at least 10 years however before my three monthly visit i was having major treatment all the time
I cant say I love the dentist but I don't worry so much when the visit comes round as i`m not expecting treatment

I can totally sympathise with you. I have 2 hours before my dental appointment and am really panicking. To make things worse my regular dentist can't do the work & i've 2 drive 30 miles to the city to see a strange dentist who is then going to pull my bottom wisdom tooth out then i've 2 drive home again!! I'm worried about the drive & the dentist. i'll def be watching 2 see other peoples suggestions on staying calm.

I've just answered someone else who has a fear of the dentist, it is extremely common. If you are just shortly to be off to the dentist then it is my guess that you are ok with it and deciding to be a very brave sausage!!!
Don't worry about panick attacks, shaking or feeling faint because they have seen it all before.
You can get prescription from your doctor, and from the dentist (ie, sedative), please don't worry too much. Believe me the reality of going to the dentist is ok and sometimes even quite pleasant!

Hi, no need to worrie. i dont know what your teeth problem is, i hope its not a big deal. but i'll give you an example. i had a tooth operation around 6 years ago and it was very nasty belive me, i aint gonna talk about it coz it was like a horror movie with a lot of blood and great pain. anyways, after that i said to myself that i dont want to go thru this again. so since then each month i go to a checkup. the destist look at my teeth and if therese ever a problem takes care of it imediatly. for exemple, a tooth decay ar any other teeth problem, when its discovered early its painless, you wont feel a thing. so my advice to you is to have regular checkups (at least 3 a year) to avoid complex interventions and painful expericences. this comes from a person that didnt have any teeth problems in the last 6 years. plus its the benefit that you would always have nice teeth, who likes a person with bad teeth?
so dont worrie about today, be strong! cheers!

Talk to your dentist explain that you are "petrified",your dentist will be sympathetic and will help you,but if you do not tell him/her they won't know your fears;remember your not the only one who is petrified, the dentist deals with lots of people who feel like they don't want to be there.GOOD LUCK!

First of all breathe deeply (through your nose) and try to relax your muscles. This helps the body to calm down.
It is a dentist appointment, a not disaster.
Ask yourself:
- Why am I afraid of the dentist?
- How can I overcome that fear?
For the panic attacks, just remember to breathe; slow, steady, through your nose.

There are dentists who specialize in treating patients with severe fears of dental treatments. Try and find one.

For any serious procedures I use a sedation dentist. They put you out just long enough to do the procedure and when you wake up, its over.
