I suppose it depends on the type of rain.

If it's just water there's no point in ducking really. But if it was raining Grand Pianos, Filing Cabinets or Venomous Cobras I suppose ducking might be a good idea.

It's a phycological reaction to not wanting to get wet. Ever get out of the shower and have the phone ring? Even though you are alone and the phone is not a video instrument, people cover themselves and even feel embarrased about being naked while talking on the phone.

These are things that we call "quirks". They are harmless little reactions to situations from the way we are taught.

We are taught to stay out of the rain, so we duck.

We are taught to be modest, so we cover ourselves when we talk on the phone, etc.

Where I live, you just walk on, rain or no rain. I see people try to act like they can prevent getting the same soaking as me, but I don't care, and they do.
Of course, if you carry an umbrella, you have a better chance of avoiding the soaking.

If you duck the rain is much more likely to hit the back of your head, rather than your face....

It's an amalistic reaction to someone throwing something (or in this case something dropping) on you. Compare it to flinching when someone throws something at you. Also, ducking and tucking body parts in ideally keep you dryer. :)

They don't want to get rain in their eyes or on their glasses. It's also a natural instinct.

Reflex reaction. Not logic, just reflex to duck when anything comes at a person.
