look for words that have the spelling differences. You have to know these in advance.
American - British:
color - colour
neighbor - neighbour etc. (o - ou)
civilization - civilisation (some z -s differences, not always)
Many nouns are different, again know them in advance:
hood and trunk of a car - bonnet and boot
elevator - lift
sweater - jumper
pencil eraser - rubber
rubber - condom
If you are talking about SPOKEN ENGLISH, and hearing the difference, this takes about two hours of listening. Just watch some TV shows (the news) from each country. In two hours your ear will be good enough to hear the difference.
I remember when I couldn't hear the diff between Nederlands and Flemish.. Television is the quick lesson!

Spelling of words and sentence structure. I like the way people from the UK use the language. They seem to have a larger and different vocabulary. Especially the Welsh.

accents, various stressings (such as pronounciation in us to pronunciation in uk, or PROcess is uk to PRAcess in us) spelling variations as well with honour in uk and honor in us, etc.
