It's a pun on "the coast" The coast could be a formation of land surrounded by water that's occupied by tourists and good weather's necessary to do fun things like diving, sailing, and water skiing. The expression "the coast is clear" translates to "Everything is okay, there are no problems." if a man is calling a home with a woman at 2 a.m. it could imply that the wife's having an affair? Or there's some problem in the marriage that perhaps thier fighting is like observing bad weather and the man on the phone wants to avoid it? Or it's the husbands gay lover calling to know if the wife's asleep so he could sneak out of the downstairs closet? Either way my EXPERIENCE tells me if you need to explain your jokes they aren't that funny.

Haha thats quite funny! I think (but not certain) that the man on the other line, was someone the wife was having an affair with! He was ringing up to see if the coast was clear for him to come round, obviously the husband answered and thought he was on about the coast on the beach or something, hence why he said "What am i the weather man!"
Hope this explains it a little better! x

The coast was clear has two meanings....
1. Is the coast clear as in can i come out of hiding like if the cops are looking for him..... or he was the wifes lover and wanted to know if the coast was clear. (he thought it was her answering the phone)
2. Is the coast clear as in the weather.... hence, im not the weatherman
not that funny so your not missing out on much

lol, the guy on the phone was having an affair with this guys wife and was hoping to speak to her and ask if the coast was clear for him to come over. The husband who answered didn't understand and thought the guy was asking about the weather. Its just not the same if you have to explain them.

"the coast was clear" meant in the joke: was it safe to come over and have sex with the woman, meaning it was for the woman , the phone call, obviously it was her secret lover wanting to make sure the husband was not home. "the coast is clear" is a saying for another example .... say i needed to run out to the clothes line to get something but was inmy underwear, i would ask the kids to tell me if the coast was clear meaning to make sure there was no neighbours outside that could see me if i ran out to the clothesline in my underwear - u get it???
also asking " if the coast was clear", meaning the coast , is a place near the ocean, "coastal" , and asking if it was clear as in a clear day, a clear sky, no rain is sight, type of thing
the man ringing was meaning the first i explained, the husband who answered took the question as meaning the later explanation i have given you,
i hope this helps u understand the joke

The Caller wanted to talk to the wife, he was wondering if he could come over, as the caller is having an affair with the wife.
The saying is the coast clear is used to ask if it is safe to proceed, also the question is the coast clear could be used to ask how the weather is on the coast,
It was funny but now ive over analysed it!!!!

That was the blokes wifes other lover calling to find out if the husband was at home or not.
"is the coast clear" is common terminologly for "is everything ok". (ie is he there or not).
