A Martial Art style is a personal thing, it may take time before you find the Art that fits/works for you as an individual.
I hold 3 black belts out of some 7 different Arts I have studied over the years. My most resent is Kenpo Karate and I am a 2nd dan black belt and have been learning & teaching the Art for 10 years.
Try lookig into the Art of Kenpo in your area, go and watch some of the classes. Check out Kenpo demos on youtube.com and type in some names like, Frank Soto, Larry Tatum, Jeff Speakman and Ed Parker.
Kenpo is an awesome self defense Art with truly devastating techniques.
Good luck.

LMAO at the first answer!!!
Really ANY MA can be for men and women. Depends on how much dedication you want to have. You can take a women's self defense class in your community (ask about it at the police department) which might only be a few classes. OR you can study for the rest of your life and reap the rewards.
Also what do you want to get out of it? Some arts are great workouts where as others emphasize slaping wrists or poking people in the eyes. There are arts that do not teach striking. Some arts have competitions, actually most do.
Here's a list of EZ to find arts that are probably in your area...
Tae Kwon Do - most popular around the world
Judo - little people throwing big people on their asses
Karate - Japanese/Okinawan arts many different styles
Kung Fu - Chinese arts again MANY different styles
Boxing
Muay Thai - Kickboxing Thailand style
Krav Maga - Jew Fu.... er Israeli defense art
Brazilian JiuJitsu - Ground grappling
ANY of these arts are great for both women and men.

it would depend on what you want to achieve from doing the sport. If you're wanting mainly flexibility + stamina then probably Tae Kwon Do, if you're wanting mainly stamina + strength then one of the Karates, if you're wanting mainly strength then Judo is best.
It would also depend on your body type which you were best suited to. Obviously if you want to do something badly enough then that doesnt matter but if you're wanting to be good at something quickly then its worth taking in to account. Generally (much stereotyping about to come) from what i've seen tae-kwon-do women tend to be short and slim. karate girls can be any height but generally fairly slender. judo girls are the best though :-) you can be any weight to pull that off easily as its very much about adapting the sport to your body rather than the other way around (like some of the other martial arts).
So yeh I find Judo the best (plus you don't get punched or kicked which is always nice - the idea of a broken nose doesnt really appeal to me).

Any martial art has merit, as you will learn alot, but you have to make sure the school is good, as there are many "macdojos" who only care about money and not proper training. If you check out a martial art school with alot of black belts, or many young black belts (under 25), this is a red flag, if they are under 20, walk away fast! This would apply for Karate, kung fu, tae kwon do and many more.
If you are looking just to have fun and get in shape, any would do, if you are looking for self-defense I'd recommend boxing, jiu-jitsu, muay thai, shidokan karate, freestyle karate.
good luck in your search :-)

any style is good for girls.. just get a good teacher.. because you will learn from the teacher...so if he/she is bad you will be to... but if you want to get to learn so good kicks take korean tae kwon do... they are know for their amazen kicks.... if you like to work with your hands you can take jap karate..they are kwon for their hand teck...but just remember if you master is a true master he/she will teach you martial arts... their is so such thing as style to thim... all martial art styles learn the same thing.. its just how you use it and thats how you get the style because they use it diffrently...but they all learn the same thing...but when your doing martial arts try to keep it a secret so you know no one will try to fight you or keep buggin you about it...and get a really good traditional teacher that will teach you and give you reasons for everything....
