We moved from hamilton to vancouver a couple years ago and were unable to find someone to rent to us over the phone, since they didnt trust that we would show up (reasonably). we are planning another move soon from vancouver to st.johns newfoundland and would like to avoid the cost of staying in a motel for a couple weeks while looking for an apartment, yet if no one will rent to us over the phone what other option is there?

You may want to try dealing with a real estate agency that handles rental properties. They're experienced in performing such things as background and credit checks, and that, combined with the name of a nationally reputable agency may make a landlord more willing to rent to you, without meeting you first. Since many agencies are located across Canada, you could go to a local agency in Vancouver and they would search with other agencies in Newfoundland.

Depending on the rental market in St. Johns, you may or may not have to pay a fee for this service. If there's lots of rental properties available, many landlords will pay the agency fees. If the market is tight, then you might be expected to pay the fee. Ask this up front.
