The real purpose of a second language is the ability of having a common language with the rest of the world. English is now the Lingua Franca (common language) of the global economy. In Pakistan if I'm not mistaken, there are many different dialects and Urdu would be the unifying language of all Pakistanis regardless of regional dialects.

Well, I will speak about what I know, first: I live in the United States, which has, if not by law, then by tradition that the language which unifies the peoples, English. I will then draw a parallel to the use of Urdu in Pakistan, based on what I know of the country.
However, my second language, acquired in part with the help of my mother, and with her peoples both in and south of the border, is Spanish. I'm considered an heritage speaker.

According to sociologist David Pollack, I'm considered "a Third Culture Kid (TDK)." Steve, of languagehat.com/ supplies us with a quote from a guest who has posted on the thread "Speech Accent Archive." Allow me, please:
Sociologist David Pollock describes a TCK as "a person who has spent a significant part of his or her developmental years outside the parents' culture. The TCK builds relationships to all of the cultures, while not having full ownership of any.
I would say the second language, or any language for that matter, has as its real purpose the fostering of familial and ethnic relationship, a linguistic pool from which to draw ideas, and simply but true, a bit of variety.
The second language could serve as a resource in the sense that its speakers could be called on to aid the military of the country in the case of a war or civil disturbance. You mentioned multilingual society. I would hope that Pakistan, if it is to survive the increase of fundamental, will at least give some research toward a mutlitcultural society.
