A diesel locomotive will set you back about $3 million a pop new... and passenger coaches about $1-2 million. Of course you can't buy a passenger coach from a U.S. company, but Bombardier (Canada) owns most of the cool designs... Budd Metroliner, Pullman Superliner and "GO commuter car". They can set you up.

A brand-new British diesel or electric train will cost upwards of £2m, depending on how many carriages it has (anything from 2 to 10).
These days the carriages have open-plan seating rather than compartments and will seat around 70 people.
A diesel or electric locomotive will cost around £1-2m. depending on size, power rating etc.
Steam locomotives are no longer manufactured but there are plenty around which have been renovated. Expect to pay anything up to £1m for one in full working order, more if it's a 'big name' loco like the 'Flying Scotsman'.
Add to that the running costs and the investment needed to operate and maintain a railway, or pay someone else who does to run your train on it, and you can see it's definitely a hobby only for the super-rich.

So glad that you specified that it was a railway train that you were inquiring about. Because as for the price of the other kind of train, well, first you'd have to find the right girl, and who knows how much she'll ask for.

The British Southern Railway Class 377 electric multiple units cost 1,250,000 pounds per coach, so a four-car unit costs 5,000,000 pounds.

Your question is unclear. Do you mean how much does a train cost. The answer to that is 'it all depends on what train you want to buy'. Or do you mean 'how much does it cost to travel by train' in which case, again, it depends on what your journey is. As to the number of compartments, again the answer has to be 'it all depends on the train, the number of carriages, etc.'

About the same nowadays...unless you book in advance, a journey from London Euston to Manchester Picc. would be about the same. Thought prices in Austria were cheaper - there you go!
