We are moving into a rural area of Tennessee, and there are bears in the area. We also own a Newfoundland dog. I've seen bear prints on the very spot we are building our house. Will the dog be okay outside?

my newfie and a friend were fishing one day when a bear happened along their path face to face! my dog ran circles around the bear until they were safely away. i would suggest a safe place for your newfie to sleep at night. (my girl sleeps in my bedroom next to the bed) maybe you can build her her own pen so you wont have to worry about her safety.

No... the dog might discourage a bear by barking if the bear wasn't interested to begin with. But no dog can win a fight with a determined or angry bear. Even more alarming is the fact that YOU can't win a fight with a bear. You're building a house where there are bears known to frequent the area and you aren't putting in any protection?

No. It would not. It could hold off a bear. Make time for you to escape, but a bear would kill it, if it chose to.

The only canine that could severely injure a bear would be a Neoplotian Mastiff. This was what they were (one of the things) in ancient Rome.

Two or more dogs would dis-orientate a bear enough to make it turn and run.

I wouldn't worry about your Newfoundland. But I would not bait a bear around your house. No bird feeders, seal any outdoor food sources, etc...

If you love your dog you just better keep a good eye on him.I would definitely keep an eye on him at all times when you let him out if bears are loose around the area. You never know if the bear may have babies and will protect their family and probably would attack your dog. A good high fence would help too. If you can't afford it I sure would keep my eye on my baby.I told my friend about your question because she has a Newfoundland too and she agrees with me highly. They are a friendly dog. Keep him that way.

If you value your NewFoundland do not leave it outside at night. Make friends with the neighbors and ask them about the bears activity around the area. Food dishes for dogs are a natural attraction for all kinds of wild animals. Contact your Tennessee state dept of natural resources and see if they have any suggestions to keep the bears clear of your yard.

I own Saints and pitted one against one an angry bear could easily take out a 200 pound Saint. However, bears for the most part will run from the dog. They will stand and fight for food and their young. But, bears are not likely to just enter your property and pick a fight for the sake of fighting. I have a friend that lives in Alaska and she has two JRT's that often chase the bears away from her trash. I would just try and keep the dog from getting a bear cornered and the bear should just retreat back in to the woods.

I'd be very careful. Newfoundland dogs are big and strong, but black bears are much bigger, much stronger, and can do far more damage. Leaving your pet out at night (when bears typically roam) is not recommended.

This is not a smart remark, but a serious one.

i could advise no longer preserving your dogs outside at evening. Saint Bernard's are not familiar because the most aggressive dogs and a undergo is truly larger, fantastically searching on what type of undergo it truly is. If a undergo needs to, he can actual overpower your Saint Bernard. A dogs's organic reaction is to wrestle again, yet that would not advise he gained't get critically injured contained in the technique.
