My husband is a new tattoo artist and while he has supplies and things, he needs more stainless steel tubes and needles. I wanted to surprise him and order a bunch of tubes/needles for him. But I'm having trouble finding out what a good price for tubes and needles are. Is there anyone that works with a supplier or company that can offer good service and reasonable prices. I want good products for him, but I don't want to pay way too much for these things. I was just wondering how much is too much? Are there kits where I can order a bunch of stuff for him and have him be set for a little while? He said he wants the tubes with the larger grips, needing 7 mag tubes, 5 mag tubes and 7 liner tubes. Also 7 mag needles, 5 mag needles and 7 liner needles. I know you are all going to tell me to just give him the money and let him buy his own stuff, but my family and I are so proud of him that we just want to get him everything he needs to set up his station as a way to show support.

Duh, I didn't even think to ask the shop owner. Thanks everyone!

If he is a new tattoo artist, he should be able to ask the shop owner where to look. I'm sure he or she would love to help out their new professional. If you want to surprise him, I suggest you do the same. Have the shop owner order the stuff for you , when it comes in you can wrap it up, present style.

Average tattoo cost is $100 per hour. Some are a little higher and I've seen some charge less. I have only 2 tattoos that were less that $100. Just remember that you get what you pay for. Most shops that charge a little over $100 hire a better quality artist. When getting a tattoo it is beneficial to not just choose some flash from a website or from the wall. You can use it as a reference but you want your tattoo artist to change it enough for it to be an original. I know from experience that it is weird running into a stranger with the exact same tattoo you have. I had someone steal my original idea from looking in a tattoo magazine. Also, always tip your tattoo artist. I usually tip $10 per hour of work he put into it. The most I've tipped so far is $60. That was a big tattoo.. much more than 5 inches. Good luck! And never ask anyone for an idea of what you should get. If you have to ask someone for ideas, you aren't ready for a tattoo. IMPORTANT: NEVER put down a deposit for a tattoo unless you are sure that artist is the one you want to do the tattoo. If you are getting your first tattoo look at a few different places and check out their books and see if they've done something similar or in the same style as you are thinking about getting.. DO NOT SETTLE for an artist that is "good enough". I cannot stress this enough.. Deposits are NON-REFUNDABLE and you need to make sure the artist is talented enough to do your tattoo. NEver get a tattoo from an artist that doesn't have any tattoos either!!!!

If he had apprenticed and is now a "professional" artist, his mentor will be able to lead you down the right path as to where you should get the supplies.

Don't take this the wrong way, but here...people will tell you places to buy that only scratchers buy from because the real professionals do not give this advice here in "answers" in the event (not that I am saying this is true) that your man is self-taught and is setting up at home, etc. Most of our suppliers only sell to professionals that can provide a shop address, phone, etc., - proof they are legit.

If he is setting up a station at an already established studio, ask the owner where you can order from and tell the owner that you want to get some supplies for your husband as a gift.

Seconding Tatts comment, Its a nice thought but you might want to speak to someone at his shop to get their input.

if you are legit have a look at CAM's supplies (they will only send to shops etc so you prob will need to tlak to his mentor about how to get it delivered without confirmation phonecalls to him, and without a COD arriving with it). They usually have great deals on tips etc, they were running one recently at $4 tip tube and grip, we ordered about 60 and they work great.

ditto on Blair's answer, just ask his mentor or the shop owner, they get a shop discount.
