ok, so what does happen to someone who leaves islam?

His family must talk to him first, with kindness and try to know the reason. If He\She Insisted, then it's His\Her choice, she can still live peacefully among them and enjoy all rights of a human, although she is not obliged to do our rituals, she'll have to pay taxes.. In Islam, Muslims don't pay taxes; they pay ZAKAH which is a charity of 2.5% of what you saved and didn't use for a year. Tax is the alternative as non Muslims don't pay Zakah, Tax is lower in Value than Zakah by 0.5%.
If she's a female married to a Muslim man, she remains his wife.. but if He's a male married to a Muslim Lady, They are separated by the Rule of Islamic law as soon as he leaves Islam.
Some radicals states that: he must be killed and all this nonsense, and that's not true at all. If he's living in a Muslim country He still enjoys all the rights of Muslim like life, enjoyment of property, Medical care and protection.
Some people actually leave Islam because they get those Radicalistic opinions, and think that "Quran Says so".
Finally, The person who leaves Islam shall be Judged by God in Dooms day, The point of heaven or Hell is ultimate to God's dicreation and the deeds of that Person, Generally, anyone who staisfies God go to heaven whatever his religion is.

Lawrance stated it correct, Death Panelity was announced in Muhammad(pbuh) times for subsiding a conspiracy against islam, where the enemies of islam used to enter islam with evil plans , take Shahdah for that in large number and start living with muslims, and in that way they used to make the other muslim confused by different ways about islam and later on they used to leave islam in great number showing the world that islam is a false religion and thats why we have quited it, When Muhammad(pbuh) realised that, this punishment was announced so as to stop them from entering islam with evil plans.....And it worked then.but it was stated that this announcement was to make them stop conspiring agaisnt islam and muslims....we can not apply it for today, Saudi governament is very strict regarding this but no such actions are taken in other countries....and yes there are peoples who quit islam infact have heard of one in my muslim country as well and they are alive and living in peace...there is no compulsion in islam !though we consider them as losers but Allah is the only judge !not we !

i think if someone leaves islam nothing will happen to him..he will be just a non-muslim or whatever he's gonna be..i know many muslims that converted to another religion and nothing happened to them..
but after that person dies most probably he will go to hell...

nothing my cousin she was a Muslim who was raised in England she converted and she is now living in America she had a christian mother and Muslim father and they separated, it is something we don't see every day where I come from Muslims and Christians live side by side if someone converts he will never say it loud not because he will be killed because he wouldn't want to go through , people looking at him and talking about him. in other countries like Saudi Arabia for example he could be killed ... he is called mortad and he is worse than anything in any Muslim country he will be called so, Christians and Jews in this case will be better than him, because he once knew Islam and converted its the biggest sin god will never forgive. in day of judgment he will go directly to hell.

well basically he/she becums a 'murtad' i.e apostate
but if ur talkin abt wat happens 2 dat person in the country he/she is stayin in than well in a highly conservative country like Saudi Arabia ur excecuted but in oder countries like Dubai 4 instance no action is taken against him/her.
But basically we shud respect his/her decisions coz in islam der's no compulsion in religion........but some countries fail 2 understand dat and take God's decision in dier own hands........
