I just answered a question like this one. Alot of people are scared of the dentist because they have no dental knowledge. Find a dentist and staff that are caring and will do anything to make you comfortable. Get a full exam and have them diagnose what needs to be done and have them explain each procedure and in what order it will be done and why. After the appointment research the procedures that you discussed with your Dr. (they should even have brochures that explain each of them). Also find a office that is updated in technology, rather than ones that are stuck in the 80's, they will have newer tools to help with pain free dentistry. Once you get in the routine of going and discover it's not all that bad, you might find that you enjoy coming to the office and get to know the staff on a personal basis... Good luck ;)

First of all I would just like to say that it is normal to have an instinctive fear of a near stranger probing inside your mouth. As a child I had an overwhelming fear of the dentist but the more often you go the less this fear is.
In the first instance I would recommend you go to your Doctor and ask for a one - off script for a sedative to take just before you go to the dentist (get down on you knees and beg if you have to!) Then while you are at the dentist, before any treatment, explain your fear. They should be able to offer sedative treatment and should be very understanding, if they are not go to another dentist. I believe that most good dentists are fully aware of this side of their profession. Go for it and best of luck. PS the fear is always ten times worse than the reality!

Just start to imagine your dentist in tooth fairy costume and will help get over your fear.

Try a hypnotherapist.
My grandma had to have her wisdom teeth removed while she was heavily pregnant, so they couldn't anaesthetise her.
She went through the whole procedure with no pain relief with the hypnotherapist present, and didn't feel a thing. Actually, didn't remember a thing!
You won't need a hypnotherapist present at your consultation or procedure, just have some sessions with them beforehand.
Hope this helps!

My husband has to have the dentist prescribe Valium for him to take just before his appointment. I know several other people that have to do this too.

we've got a local 'phobia dental clinic' or something. they deal with just people scared of the dentist. i think you can opt to have a general anaesthetic while they check you teeth & clean & polish them.
think it's quite expensive but probably worth it to save your teeth x
