The U.S. has bases in so many different countries because those countries have requested our presence there because in many of those countries, the US has helped to oust dictatorship and help the people to establish democratic governments at the requests of the inhabitants, because having the American bases there helps to stimulate their economies by providing jobs and having the soldiers there to spend their money on the local economy, and because the military has two purposes, one war time and one peace time. The Military's peace time mission is to give humanitarian aid to any people that request it. The humanitarian aid is anything from military protection from guerilla forces, assist with the local law enforcement, distribute food, clothing, and various equipment for kids and adults. The military does alot more than the media reports but most times, humanitarian aid in the news does not sell papers.

Am inclined to believe JeeperPeeper 321's figure of 59 bases throughout the world. US has bases because our economy is based on the concept of the "War Chest." We supply superior ordnance to meet the demand of those whom would challenge us after doing a test run by stirring up a smaller country or two in a divide and conquer scenario before taking on larger quarry.

Many countries ask our bases to be there. It benefits the economy. After the bases in Bayern, Germany closed some of the Germans down there asked the Americans to come back.
Bulgaria is trying to get American bases to come in.

I completely REJECT your alleged "facts"...

According to the US DoD Base Structure Report for Fiscal Yr 2004, we have bases in FIFTY-NINE locations outside of the 50 States... and OF those locations, only 50 of them are in foreign nations... the REST are in US Territories / protectorates (Guam, Puerto Rico, etc).

Now you MAY be getting your "facts" from a leftist source that would list EVERY Embassy... which of COURSE will have a small detachment of US Marines and a military liason, but are NOT BASES !!

there are 2 easy answers for this but they gloss over the bigger picture.

1. fastest deployment to a area if you have people already in a great number of places.
2. to protect our interests - both at the request of the host country (interest is our treaties) and interests of political nature.

The global elite are well on their way to world domination aren't they?

you are going to get the standard answers like: so that we can know whats going on in the rest of the world and act accordingly when something goes awry or is harming american interests.

I have heard though that a lot of those bases have been left behind from prior wars.

Which countries and where in those countries?

Does that make any sense?

Actually countries want American bases on their soil.

They like

1) the protection afforded by American forces
2) many jobs to local people at American bases.

USA has bases in Germany (because we got rid of Hitler), Italy (because we got rid of Mussolini), Bosnia (because we got rid of Slobodan Milosovic), Iraq (because we got rid of Saddam Hussein), Afghanistan (because we got rid of the Taliban), South Korea (because we drove out the Communists), Japan (because we got rid of Emperor Hirohito).

In all of those cases, American forces are there at the pleasure of DEMOCRATIC governments that choose to keep American troops. They have never asked us to leave and they never would. They are richer and better off after having us free them from totalitarian regimes.

If you want your country to be invaded by Iran, Russia or China then go right ahead and ask for it.
