I am 50 and have been only experiencing the hot flashes for a few months. They can be very uncomfortable. I am taking the mini pill right now to control some very, very heavy bleeding and it is only made of progestin so now I have the hot flashes. But I would suggest that you take a plant based or what they call a bio-identical hormone. Soy suppliments are the best. Estroven is the one I was taking through the last few years and works well. Since during peri and menopause your hormones go up and down, it would be good to speak to your doctor about it. There are more options than just going on HRT these days. I am including a couple of sites that can help you:

You have my sympathy. I'm 50 this year, hysterectomy 15 years ago, and I've just had the same symptoms. I couldn't sleep at night, awake every hour almost, flushes through the day.... oh how it drives you crazy.... and I noticed the dreadful headaches I was getting - migraine types that made me really ill. Good news is..... in January they stopped as quickly as they started and I've felt on top of the world ever since. No hot flushes, not a single headache and best of all, my sex drive is on the up again! Let's hope it passes soon enough and you're feeling much better again. Good luck.
