suprisingly it's usually cheaper to have the dog fly in-cabin with you.

I'm getting ready to "swap" stud pup's with a breeder in TX's and flying down was about $40-70 cheaper depending on the airline.

Popular shippers are:
Continental and Delta
(and thats based on a Poll I started in a dachshund breeder forum) The other airlines had mostly negative comments and weren't highly recommended.

You really just need to call them and ask them their rates, as they change.

I will add though that Continental is, as far as I know to date, the only one that has heated/airconditioned belly for animal transportation.

I won't ship my pups with any airline but Continental. They actually have a pet sitter that stays with the dog at all times..It is not the cheapest, but is the best bargain!
The cost depends on the size of your dog, and the size of kennel he needs. My puppies ship for $200, (that includes kennel and vet USD certificate) anywhere in the States..whether to the state next door, or across the country..shipping via air costs the same..
However, many years ago I shipped a dog to CO from California via Frontier Airlines..It was the cheapest from CA to CO..It was $89 then, but that was about 15 years ago.

You can drive, and make the trip over a weekened. I left Denver at 6 am, and got to southern CA by midnight.

Take him your self would be the cheapest, pets love to go for rides, with breaks in between to his buisness and little leg stretch hear and there.
