What is it that this illusion is fooling?

It is an illusion in the sense that it is a thought construct, rather than an objective reality. Our sense of self does not correspond to some sort of "thing" that is our self (like a soul), but rather is a product of our general mode of thinking and of categorizing ideas. It is also an illusion in that it can, at least temporarily and in certain ways--such as through meditation--be transcended.

Well since we all seem to believe in different things, there's a good chance we are all fooling ourselves. I think the only true wise person knows that they are a fool.

There is always an element of that, so long as you are aware of it and keep it as real as you are able.

Ideals... especially religious one's can never be achieved, we are humans and it's only sensible to accept ourselves for what we are rather than what we ideally might like to be or are told we should be.

Self-acceptance is a truly liberating thing, it's achieved through honesty rather than denial.
