A continental breakfast usually includes breads, croissants and rolls, and often cold meat and cheeses too. It's a cheap option for a hotel compared to cooked breakfasts, and calling it "continental" is really a marketing ploy to make "breakfast" sound more interesting.

Fresh croissants, danish pastries and muffins. Various cheeses and hams. Good muesli and a selection of fruit juices. In other words, all good things that I might eat at home if I could be bothered, but certainly wouldn't make a fuss about making. Since you can usually eat as much as you need, it'd be worth it if you are staying away, and want to stock up your food before you go out for the day.

They usually provide old muffins, croissants, a little fresh fruit, some packaged cereal and coffee. Not exactly egg mcmuffins, mc hashbrowns, mccoffee, apple or orange juice, potato pancakes, fruit salad, turkey sausages and a green salad.
