i dont finish most of the books i begin to read, mainly because i read slow, thus reducing my motivation if it takes too long to finish a book. i want to read shantaram but just not able to pick it up looking at the number of pages!

read a short-ish book that you havent read before as fast as you can and then record how long it took, and what the main themes (and subplots) are. Try to list the characters and as much detail as you can...
then read it again slowly and see how much you missed
continue doing this until you become accostomed to picking up more and more information at a faster pace and as you build up the lenghts of the books it will be easier and easier!
