we recently got another rescue ex-racing greyhound as a friend for the one we've already got.So far there has'nt been any fights between them as the new dog has accepted that the other dog is "top dog".Last night there was an almight yelping and we went to see what was going on but could'nt see anything. This morning i found a large puncture mark in my other dogs neck where the new dog had bitten him.

Im scared my husband might want to give the new dog back to the rescue centre where we got him from but i love this new dog to bits and i dont want to lose him. They've never had a fight before as they get on so well.Could this just be a one-off thing or would it happen again?I also have two young children to think of and they would be very upset if we had to give this dog up.

we've only had this new dog for a few weeks and the dogs are both the same age and they've been neutered. They're not possesive over toys, food etc,the only thing i can think of is that the other dog stepped on the new dog by accident and he got a fright

Greyhounds are basically a non aggressive breed. Fighting is a rare thing for them, and likely to be a one time settling of differences. As they are from rescue, I assume they are already neutered..which would be the biggest antagonizer.. I believe that the new dog just had been bullied a little too much, and needed to express his own worthiness..
Give them another chance, as all may well be settled now.
I have rescued 18 sight hounds, and fighting is a minimum with these breeds, but now and then, each has to stick up for themselves..and that is usually the end of it.,the other has learned just how far he can go.(the fight may have even been over the warm spot on the bed..that is what I have seen the most...lol )

It's likely that this was a one time incident, but you can never be sure. How long have you had this new dog, and how close in age are the two dogs?

Because you didn't see what led up to the bite, it could have been something that you will be able to work with, or prevent. Perhaps they fought over a toy, or a bed. Or your older dog tried to dominate the younger dog but lost out...

I would just be very cautious and supervise the dogs together carefully for the next few days and make a judgement then. I wouldn't give up a dog after a single incident...give him some time and another chance!

It certainly could happen again.
You should keep a close eye on the dog, and see what may have caused it to bite. If it was possessive (over food or a toy), then that kind of behaviour is unacceptable. You must put a stop to it. Make sure that your dogs know that you are in charge of BOTH of them. Always always supervise the new dog around your children.
