It is not easy to eradicate their belief regarding Islam cos majority believe the mainstream media but what we can do is to answer all their questions calmly. Do not feel offended because these are ignorant people. Maybe it is a little bit difficult but if we try harder and answer at our best, maybe God's will, they will soften or at least bother to read what is Islam.
ISLAM
A religion deeply respected by most people.A religion about love, truth and peace. A religion that ALLAH created and HE is the MERCIFUL & THE MASTER OF THE WORLDS.There is no other GOD but only ALLAH.
The first thing that one should know and clearly understand about Islam is what the word "Islam" itself means. The religion of Islam is not named after a person as in the case of Christianity which was named after Jesus Christ, Buddhism after Gotama Buddha, Confucianism after Confucius, and Marxism after Karl Marx. Nor was it named after a tribe like Judaism after the tribe of Judah and Hinduism after the Hindus. Islam is the true religion of "Allah" and as such, its name represents the central principle of Allah's "God's" religion; the total submission to the will of Allah "God". The Arabic word "Islam" means the submission or surrender of one's will to the only true god worthy of worship "Allah" and anyone who does so is termed a "Muslim", The word also implies "peace" which is the natural consequence of total submission to the will of Allah. Hence, it was not a new religion brought by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) I in Arabia in the seventh century, but only the true religion of Allah re-expressed in its final form.
Islam is the religion which was given to Adam, the first man and the first prophet of Allah, and it was the religion of all the prophets sent by Allah to mankind. The name of God's religion lslam was not decided upon by later generations of man. It was chosen by Allah Himself and clearly mentioned in His final revelation to man.

You make some valid observations.
To me the most vital thing Islam needs is some centralized authority speaking out against the acts of the radicals. Unfortunately, Islam is very non-hierarchical, so there is no central group of perceived leaders of the Islamic faith that speak with one voice and condemn the actions of the heretical.
Where is the public outcry from Islam's theologians over the acts of these radicals? It is missing in the media and the silence among the leadership is deafening to the observers on the sidelines.
If Christian radicals were performing the acts that we see Islamic fundamentalists doing, there would be a world outcry among the leaders of Christian organizations condemning these persons as heretics. It would be in all the newspapers, television, etc.
Muslims are quick to point to the violence recorded in the Christian bible and claim that Christianity’s early history was violent, too. But unlike the Bible where some very awful HISTORY is recorded, the violence described in the Koran is part of Islamic THEOLOGY. This is a very significant distinction between the two belief systems.
The famous Muslim scholar and “father of modern history” Ibn Khaldun states the dichotomy between jihad and defensive warfare thus:
In the Muslim community, the holy war [i.e. jihad] is a religious duty, because of the universalism of the Muslim mission and the obligation to convert everybody to Islam either by persuasion or by force... The other religious groups did not have a universal mission, and the holy war was not a religious duty for them, save only for purposes of defense... They are merely required to establish their religion among their own people. That is why the Israeilites after Moses and Joshua remained unconcerned with royal authority [e.g. a “caliphate”]. Their only concern was to establish their religion [not spread it to the nations]… But Islam is under obligation to gain power over other nations (The Muqudimmah, vol. 1 pg. 473).
I believe Islam is going through what the Christian faith went through during the Reformation. During the Reformation religious leaders were forced to carefully define their doctrines, that is, what do Christians really believe? This established a baseline of orthodoxy that then could be used as a litmus test for the practices of self-professed Christians.
Islamic leaders must do the same thing. They must codify their acceptable theologies, especially the violence now part of the Sharia, Muhammad’s Sunna (4:24, 4:92, 8:69, 24:33, 33:21, 33:50), and the “sword-verses” of the Koran (e.g., 9:5, 9:29). Then Muslim leaders should defend these theologies against heretics loudly and publicly.

Unfortunately, the Muslim condemnation of terrorism is not present in Western media. It exists, but if something makes Islam look good, Western reporters refuse to show it. Sad, 'cause there's plenty of Muslim condemnation of terrorism.
Hmmm, this is a toughie. Muslims need to debunk more and more. Ohhh, you know what? They should show biblical proofs of Islam. Really, if Christians saw that Islam is prpopecied in the Bible, then maybe they'd stop hurling turds and start being civil.
Here's one for starters:
What the Bible Says About Muhammad (pbuh)
http://jamaat.net/muhinbible/muhinbible.html
I hear you have a Y! group for peaceful discussion of Islam. This is a great start, people need to get past the myths. They need to be debunked altogether.
Ohhhh yes, if Muslims could explain the difference between their religion and the MidEast cultures, this would help non-Muslims a lot! It's confusing when we see that for example, in Saudi Arabia, women aren't given the right to work or drive, so people think that's Islamic. No, it's not Islamic, it's Saudi. If Muslims can PLEASE clear up these confusions with examples and Qur'anic references to the truth, that would really help.
My two cents.

I'm not Muslim, but I am sick of all the hate. I do know that intolerance goes two ways. You can only choose your own actions, not those of the people around you. And in order for a group of people to debunk the intolerance, you need to walk the talk. It's good to say "we love all mankind and we're peaceful". It's another thing entirely to demonstrate it.
If you do not identify with a certain group you must stand up against them and speak out for that which is right. Don't be rude or ugly or evil. Just do the right thing. While you are proclaiming your love of God, proclaim your love of His creations (this includes people of all walks of life). Proclaim that life is precious. And then demonstrate this. We don't need more empty rhetoric...we have enough politicians! The world needs more good people to do good works. If you do them in the name of God, so much better!

If Muslim countries allowed for freedom of speech and religion, it would go a long way towards gaining the respect of the rest of the world. Islam should not be free of criticism. If it is strong enough it will survive.

It's True for any religion (esp. peace Loving religions), and Gandhi exemplified it best, "Be the change you wish to see in the world." He didn't say that to sell a religion or a book or anything. He gave the Truth to everyone, for everyone. And it works wherever you go and in whatever you do; not immediately, mind you. We all suffer (and it is best to do it for real Love.) Know that, and face that with courage. Stay focused on you intent.
Be the worshiper of Islam that IS free of hate and misconceptions.

A good place to start would be for Islam not to force Shari’a on countries like Algeria and Senegal and other countries that, even though are mostly Muslim, do not wish to follow the tyranny of Islamic Law.
You may say, "There shall be no compulsion in religion" (2:256), but I would reply many Qur’anic scholars insist that, in its context, this verse has nothing to do with not forcing non-Muslims to submit to the rule of Islam. Many also teach that this "no compulsion" verse was abrogated (2:106) and replaced by the later and more numerous verses that say things like: "Prophet, make war on the unbelievers and hypocrites and deal rigorously with them." (9:73) "Make war on them until idolatry shall cease and God’s religion shall reign supreme." (8:39) "Fight against such of those ... who ... do not embrace the true Faith, until they pay tribute out of hand and are utterly subdued." (9:29) In Muhammad’s day, conquered Jews and Christians who did not convert to Islam were allowed to live, provided they paid jizya, a "protection" tax. Pagans were only given the choice to convert or die. This was the "peace" offered by 7th century Islam. To this day, in every country where Islamic law (Shari’a) is embraced, non-Muslims (and, yes, women) are treated as second-class citizens. Freedom of religion is forbidden.
I can quote to you scores of verses from the Qur’an that teach quite plainly how Muslims are to make war on those outside of Islam.
Thus if you want to seriously erradicate hate towards Islam, you must erradicate the hate OF Islam. Muslims who oppose the terrorist acts should rise up against the terrorists. Muslims who seek peace should not dance in the streets when American buildings are destroyed, they should not shout out their approval when the Iranian President calls for the destruciton of the United States and Israel.
I could go on and on, but I doubt it really matters much. Only God Himself can open your eyes to the truth.

It would help if a few extreme organisations would stop blowing things up and making statements suggesting that all non-muslims (Infidels) must die, since Allah will not be pleased until the whole world is subjected under Islamic law. I think that may improve things a little.

I think Muslims need to be a little more vocal about condemning acts of terrorism. I realize that they do, but apparently not enough people are hearing them. Other than that, I think all you can do is continue to be good people, good neighbors, good coworkers, etc. I think maybe those who hate Islam just don't know any Muslims or something, because the Muslims I know are good people.

In all sincere respect, I can tell you this. ALL religions (including Muslim) need to switch from religion to relationship with Allah or God. Don't hold your breath though - this will never happen since people feel they must be doing a "good" deed or action to earn God's [Allah's] approval and acceptance. This will occur only, at the time when Jesus Christ returns to the earth to make this entirely possible for ALL humans ever, born to do so ! More Jesus - LESS religion !!!
