Did telegraph cables (cables placed underwater in order to guide steam ships) evolve into the internet and other modern cables ?
sources if possible please. thanks

Yes. The first cable was laid in 1858 and, although it quickly failed, was followed by many more cables which carried first telegraph and later telephone calls. Today, fibre-optic cables carry most of the world's undersea internet traffic. However, it's important to note that these are not the original telegraph cables - the ocean floor is littered with old decommissioned cables!

By the way, the telegraph cables did not guide steam ships. Ships used radio-based telegraph systems invented around 1912 to communicate.
