I'm not sure if I would say it is COMMON for a young man, but not unusual for humans period! I would imagine this happens because of the fear of rejection of what he or she is really thinking or feeling. If a false signal is rejected then maybe then they can feel comfortable being themselves. It could be simple shyness, peer pressure. Truly there could be many factors!

If he likes her, and still sending wrong signal that he do not care....thats means he really care about his action. And it may be because of two reasons.
1. Very well planned
2. Out of innocense.
But there is saying when you play hard to get, girl will follow. Those who are really great at playing this game, they make a lot of dates. But this kind of relationship do not generate good and serious relationship. These kind of guys are just flirting and do not mean anything other than this.

It could be the old school punch a girl tecnique. I mean if a guy likes a girl sometimes he makes fun or insults or just gets on the bad side of the girl he likes for attention. If you are always talking about how he annoys you, it has worked since you are constantly thinking about him or talking about him. Its more of a setup than an actual wooing method.

it depends on the girl and the guy itself. say, if the girl is playing hard to get, that could put him in real challenge, he might pay u more attention. then there r guys hate girls who plays hard to get. so if the girl is sending negative signal, he might really leave u alone for real. there r guys hu wants to chase girls or pay attention to girls giving them the right signal only...

If you only kind of know each other and he is kind of shy he may try to ignore you when you are around even though you are the center of his attention and really wants to get to know you.
If you are already a couple and he is acting like he doesn't like you, he is either playing games or he really doesn't like you.

Yes, it's one of method for courting girls. He wanted to make you curious about him. Just like Pinocchio said, he wants you to do the chasing.
