In addition to Gromit12's answer, I would suggest you to ask your husband to send an Invitation letter (in Japanese language) by fax, addressed to the Japan embassy/consulate where you are currently residing and supposed to apply for the visa, and send a copy to you. (Most of the embassies will not accept the invitation letters send by e-mail due to the authentication purpose).

Attach the copy of this invitation letter along with the visa application while submission. I hope it will workout.

Try your best, good luck.

You need to visit the Japanese consulate office in your area to apply for a tourist visa if you are only planning a short trip.
You will definitely need:
1. your current passport,
2. a state ID (driver's or non driver's ID)
3. probably a social security card
4. probably a marriage certificate
They will need to know when you are going & how long you will be there ... not sure if you need to show the airline ticket.
Best bet is to call the Japanese Consulate and they can give specific requirements.
Also, it can't hurt to check out the following website:
www.cdc.gov/travel
You can reference this site for vaccinations you might need prior to traveling. If you do need any, make sure you do vaccines at least 1 or 2 weeks in advance so that your body's immune system will have had time to adjust to the vaccines.
