it doesn't, hair grows back the same way no matter how you shave. it is better to shave against the growth that way it assures an even close shave and your skin is left smoother.

The rules of going against the grain...
- First shave with the hair, then again against the hair, always using a fresh blade. This makes the hair less likely to split, which causes the appearance of multiple hairs from the same folicles during regrowth. It is also a preventative for ingrown hairs.
- Hair does not grow back coarser. That's a myth. When hair grows naturally, it is done with a tapered point. When you shave and the hair grows back, it grows out with a blunt egde because it is not a new hair, simply the old one growing out after being cut on the surface of the skin. So shaving grow-out appears to be thicker.
- Use a good moisturizer inbetween shaves to prevent ingrown hairs. If they are still a problem, switch to baby oil. This makes it easier for the hair to slide out from the folicle as it grows.

If you use ordinary razor, it would cause some irritation. But if you use a quality razor, it wouldn't cause any irritation. When we come to your question, this method may not effect hair growth, but the hair becomes somewhat (a little) coarser. Shave once in direction of the hair nap (grain) (Use the fingers to detect the direction of nap by rubbing over the skin. One direction will feel more resistance than others, that direction is against the nap). Some tough beards may get a closer shave by shaving again immediately after the first shave, but this time going in the direction across the grain or against the grain. (Some find that shaving against the grain leads to cuts, soreness and ingrown hairs.)
The ideal shave angle (razor blade meeting the face) is 28-32 degrees

hair will become more coarse with shaving in general. however, when shaving you do need to take into consideration your hair growth pattern. i am a licensed cosmetologist- i am trying to remember the rules on that- i think you may find less razor burn and irritation if you will go sideways. not exactly opposite the hair growth but at a side angle to the growth. does that help?

yes the hair is in the form of sheaths that why when the hair is split u see layers it is always better to shave from one side. if you do both sides you are spoiling the and are making it coarser.

Not for me. I do that on my bikini line. It's the only way to get a super close shave that last longer than 2 days. I also use a mens razor, the one with 4 blades. I seem to get a better finish with my husbands razor, than my own.
