how critical is it to keep them, they are taking alot of space in my add/remove

they are important to keep because a lot of them are security updates... so all you have to do is go into add/remove programs and up the top of the box uncheck the "show updates" option and you wont see them anymore :)

I would first research how to make a new Win XP SP2 CD rom, because the original CD-Rom that WinXP comes on doesn't work anymore after so many upgrades (trust me on this, you can try it and see).
Anyway, once you find on the Internet how to do it and you burn your new OEM CD and test and make sure it works, then you can get rid of all that crap.
I included a link to one such location below, basically the process is called slipstreaming but it also involves burning an ISO image and I forget the entire thing but there are free ISO burners out there as well, the entire process only costs time.

Cant help it,everyone world wide is experiencing the same problem as you.

If you dont trust microsoft, just disable the the updates and get urself a decent firewall.

there's a box at the top of add remove uncheck it !

Deleting them would be like plugging holes in your house and then wonder why insects and mice are coming in...
