He is greedy. Indian engineers are cheaper to hire that Americans. My son has his masters degree in computer engineering, and was working for Compaq in Houston. He was laid off because they outsourced everything to India.

I totally agree with BarB. No worker irrespective of nationality will work for lower wages unless there is a reason. The reason here is H1B is screwed up and it is employer centric. The employer holds the employee captive for years as long as the employee's Green card is pending.

1) How many of you know that people cannot change employers when GC is pending? For that matter cannot get promoted! damn

2) How many of you know that it takes approx 6-10 yrs for an Indian, 4-7 yrs for chineese to get a GC?

3) How many of you know that most of the H1B's are swallowed by body shops who in turn send them to Gates shop? Gates can hire them if the visas are available but the body shops who can resort to all sort of practices run out the visas in 4 weeks. Gates can hire only as per his need. He cannot hire some one and not pay which body shops do.

4) Check how many of the students in grad school are Indian and chineese. Who pays the out of state tuition in universities?

5) You cannot build a school system and people with skill set that needs the demands of business night over night. It takes 2 or 3 decades. How many of the kids today like science and maths?

6) India and China have human capital rich of maths and science . Do you know that 90% of the Indians have Maths and science as mandatory subjects in High school?

7) Its not Bill Gates. Its the system. Dont become another Lou Dubious Dobbs who buys stock from every company that outsources, lives on 100 acre farm in North Bergen county and does the same rhetoric about middle class to keep his ratings up

Bill Gates is saying that our public schools suck when it comes to math and science and Bill Gates is putting his money where his mouth is by giving huge grants to 'High Tech High Schools' across the country to fund a better math and science curriculum. He'd also rather he could hire them here, but mean while needs some while we grow our own. I'd say cut the family based immigration so only a spouse and minor children will have preference to come based on a prior immigrant's residence/citizenship. This will free up a lot of visas we can use for those we really need. The problem is that the cost of immigrants on us, on our schools and services, is being ignored in the Senate debate. They are just adding the numbers of immigrants and legalizations each interest group wants on top of each other. That is not reform, it is excess.

India has I.I.T. which the kids that get to enroll there are picked way in advance. Not everyone I've met at MSC went to I.I.T. I have met many Microsoft employees due to the fact I live close, less than 20 miles from the campus. It is his company and he wants the best (computer engineers)he can find to work for Microsoft. And I know from personal experience he does not pay slave wages.

For the richest bastard in America to make such an outcry--F him and the horse he rode in on!!. As if the policies of consevatism have not given his Company enough wealth. To blame future expanses to his bottom line on the current limits of the HB1 policy is inexcusable. Why does he not advocate for educational reform and back it with some of the impossibly able to spend it all funds that he has acquired?

Put your money where your mouth is Mr. Gates--then take the path of self righeousness!!

It is all about greed in my opinion.

Unfortunately, greed (an addiction to the lust for money) makes people forget their loyalty to their country and to their fellow citizens. According an Israeli friend, he would be considered a traitor if he lived in Israel.

He may be smart, but he is really blind. He can't see the suffering he has caused in the U.S.. I read that only 5% of students with computer majors can find jobs in the computer science field.

It does not have to do with education. Indian programmers are not as good as American programmers. Many Silicon Valley companies stopped hiring Indian programmers because of all of the errors they create. One Silicon Valley company would have gone broke (if it was not bought) because it hired too many Indian programmers.

Unfortunately, the education system in India is not as good as the American education system. That is the reason why there is not a large percentage of Indian electrical engineers that design computer chips (integrated circuit design is much more difficult than computer programming). America has invented most of the stuff the modern world uses. Bill Gates hates America. If America restricts the number of H-1B visas, he'll just offshore even more work to India.

But that's ok, because he's going to take all the money he saves and donate it to charity - to cure AIDS and stuff. So it's all for a good cause.

He isn't thumbing his nose at American computer engineering students. He knows where the most talented are (India) for the computer field. If you have never met his employees you can't make a judgment on something you know nothing about.

He hasn't ignored American Students....his problem is he cannot find enough well-educated Americans to fill all the jobs.

America is sadly lacking in an educated work force....we are way behind the rest of the world in higher education.... Our students are very poorly educated (the system has been "dumbed down") for years. Our drop out rate is one of the highest in the world.

We have raised a generation of Boobs who will spend their lives flipping burgers and collecting welfare - or stealing our stuff....

That's why he is looking outside the U.S.
