My mother cat had a kitten the other day. Heartbreakingly it has now died. Do you know of anything I should/could do for her? She's rather distraught.

Poor kitty. A lot of love, gentleness, and patience are the best things. It is especially hard on a cat when she has one kitten and it dies. That happened with one of our cats a few yrs ago. We took her and the baby kitten to the vet hoping he could save it and it died before he could even get to examine it. He did examine the mom cat and found she had an infection and was also a little anemic which may have been what killed the kitten. I wish I had known but she didn't act sick or any less lively than any other cat about to have kittens. Our vet was absolutely wonderful with her. Literally held her paw and told her how sorry he was and she seemed to understand. The vet put her on antibiotics and told us what to feed her to help build her up and she did get better. We had her spayed after she got better because neither she nor we needed to go through that again. She grieved for her kitten for several days and searched for him and called. The vet said she probably would do that and to just be patient with her. Mostly he said to love her and give her extra pampering.

One thing he didn't tell us that I wish he had was to keep her in and away from other animals with babies. She went out the next evening and came back with a baby possum she had stolen from it's mama. Since possums are deathly allergic to cat saliva it died even tho we tried to bottle feed it.

Please do take your cat to the vet for a check up in case she like my cat has a problem. Our vet said that is often the cause when kittens die.

As one person suggested... a small stuffed animal really can help ease her loss. She may tug it around and "nurture" it as she would her own kitten until she comes out of this phase. It is not at all uncommon for at least one kitten to die out of a litter, and some cats become distraught, and others don't appear to notice at all. She will be okay, but it's sweet for you to help her now when she must be terribly confused.

I understand how you must feel for your pet. My brother ACCIDENTALLY ran over 2 from a new born litter of 4 while pulling out of the drive way. The mother nudged and licked her poor babies and watched intently as my brother digged their final resting place. It took a week for the mommy to stop calling for the other two.

She must be sad, so please be extra nice. And show more affection than you usually do.

Deepest condolences.

I'm so sorry! Poor little thing...and poor MaMa, too! Yes, I think it would be a great idea to get a small stuffed animal, approx. the same size and color....to put in the bedding with her.

Give her a nice pat and a couple of kitty treats from me!

Stuffed animal can sometimes help for the loss. Watch she doesn't get mastitis, this causes teats to fill with milk, becoming hard and infected. Warm compresses twice daily can help it the teats begin to harden.

I would suggest getting a kitten from a shelter or check with your vet to see if they know someone with orphaned kittens.
