Sofitel Sukhumvit is Sukhumvit Soi 6,near Nana. Not walkable to the main shopping places. Nana does have a night market but its for tourists and a bit overpriced.
My choice for a hotel in the shopping area would be Novotel, Siam Square which is in walking range (a few minutes walk) of:-
Siam Paragon Mall
Central World Plaza Mall
MBK
Siam Discover Mall
Siam Center Mall.
Slightly longer walk from Novotel Siam Square (less than 10 mins) to Central Chit Lom Department Store - check out the promotions on the shoes (always worth a look) - the restaurant on the top floor (Loft) is also yummy and has Thai and international food.
The restaurant at the back of the new Central in Central World Trade is also very nice. Try to get a table with sofas next to the window side that overlooks the temple next door (built by Rama IV -king in the mid-19th century who developed the whole of this area of Bangkok).
Also walkable from Novotel Siam Square is Pratunam market (mainly cloathes) and Pantip Plaza (computers, cameras, and that kind of thing) - both on Petchaburi Road.
There is also a night market on the street outside Central World Plaza in the evenings (except Mondays).
That's shopping dealt with. I'll have a think about where else in Thailand you'd like.

Chang Mai which is up north is the second largest city in Thailand, most of the factories are there so lots of shopping there if you want. Krabi is also a nice place to visit if you are looking for somewhere to go that is nice and quiet, you can grab a longtail boat and visit some islands for the day. Phuket has lots of things to do and is pretty fast paced, the Phuket Phantasy is a very good production to check out while there.

My main priority in Bangkok would be to be near the Skytrain. It is the bst way to get around Bangkok. The area around Nana is interesting. There is a good, modern, inexpensive (but nice!) hotel - Majestic Suites. I stayed there 3 years ago for about $35-40, including breakfast. It is a block from the skytrain station, near the Landmark (much more expensive). Do NOT stay at the Nana or Dynasy Inn. Trust me. There is, however, a new Dynasty Grande, a few blocks away that is about a year old.
Take the skytrain everywhere! Both the Emporium and Siam sqare shopping malls are on the route and they are quite impressive. The top floor food court is great for dining and there is a movie theater.
Also, I heard that the "Bed" club is interesting also. Close to Nana area.
You can get to Patpong on the skytrain, but leave before midnight.
You can take the Skytrain to the river and take a water taxi to the Grand Palace and Reclining, Emerald and Gold Buddhas. Much cheaper than a "tour" and you won't end up a a "gem store". From the Golden Buddha (Chinatown), you can take the subway back to a skytrain station.
For the rest of your trip...I wouldn't stay in Koh Samui for 2 weeks. I would fly there from Bangkok, rent a car and spend a few days there, a few in Krabi/Ao Nang, and a few in Phuket (returning the car to Phuket and flying home from there). Check out http://www.phuket.com/budget/worldclass-drives/index.htm
There is a car ferry from Samui to the mainland at Don Sak - not very expensive.
You would drive through the Phang-nga area and take a quick boat trip to "James Bond Island" from there instead of Ao Nang.
Railei (sp?) beach in Krabi is often listed as one of the most beautiful beaches. If you are in the Krabi area and want some exercise, go to Wat Tom Suea, a buddha on top of a hill that takes over 1200 stairs to climb. Amazing views!
I would NOT drive a car in Bangkok or Pattaya. I found the roads around Krabi to be great. Getting around Phuket can be very expensive without a car or motorbike. Parking in Patong can be difficult. Best bets are Carrefour parking lot and Soi Holiday Inn (next to the Holiday Inn wall).
It cost me the same by taxi to get 90 miles to Pattaya from BKK as it did to get from Patong beach to the Laguna Phuket complex and back (only a few miles). In Phuket, rent a motorbike if you do not have a car! It will be easy to get anywhere on the Island. Skip Phuket Town.
Pattaya has great public transportation everywhere for 20 Bhat on a songthew. You can also hire one on the street to take you anywhere for a few hours VERY INEXPENSIVELY.
Chaing Mai is also worth visiting. I just returned from a trip last month on the following route...Bangkok (fly to) ChaingMai (fly to) Phuket (boat to) Phi Phi (boat to) Krabi (fly to) Bangkok. I didn't stay in Bangkok at all this trip, but spent 3 nights each in Pattaya on my arrival and deperture from Thailand. The taxi fare to Payttaya (about 90 miles) from BKK airport is 1200 bht and 1000 to return from Pattaya.

Try the Sofitel hotel on Suhkumvit (not sure about the spelling). Good hotel, pretty good price, right in the heart of the shopping district. Also, if you like beautiful beaches, go to Phuket. I went to the beach that was used in the filming of "the beach" with Leonardo DiCaprio. Very nice beach. Clear water, white sand. In Bangkok, go to the large temples and also, if you like massage, you can get a fairly cheap one (around $7.00) at Wat Po, the largest massage school in the world. Also, if you want some custom tailored clothes, try some tailor shops down by Soi8-11. Go the first day, so you can get fitted. By the fifth day, your custom tailored clothes will be done, and fit like a glove, be of the material you want and be of your design. All very reasonably priced. There is my favorite shop and they have my measurements and I order clothes and have them sent to the USA now. Have fun!!!

Phuket is the best place to go if you're a beach lover. Try Chiang Mai also. Pattaya is nice as well. I was there four years ago.
But if you love to shop for cheap but quality apparel, Bangkok is the place to visit.

The Novotel Siam Square hotel will get you pretty close to the central shopping area. For ideas on things to do after dark I suggest checking out this book: The Butterfly Trap
