I can take care of a cat, definatly. But this is what I was asking: WHAT TYPE SHOULD I GET? Like I said, I want a playful one. They all seem to be the same size, or whatever...
If possible, I want an all black one with yellow eyes, but the color isn't terribly important so long as it isn't white.

"Also, cats are more affectionate if they are spayed/neutered"
I'd like some evidence to back that claim up. I don't believe in genital mutilation: On the subject of overpopulation, the cat will be an indoor cat, and I will take measures to prevent him getting it on Kitty style with any other cat.
However, those measures will not include Testi Stew.

Check out your local shelter. You can actually bond with them first and tell their personality rather than picking one from behind glass or steel bars... You'll be suprised how good you feel adopting a loving kitty from a shelter.

Type of cat is not really going to make a difference. You will also get people telling you that males or females are better, but this doesn't matter much either. My suggestion to you is this. Get a cat that's already a year old. The reason is is that it's personality is already set. If you get a kitten, you could get one that is really playful and outgoing, but a few months down the line, they turn into a fat lazy kitty! I speak from experience, I got my boy when he was 10 weeks old, he's now a year, and loves to sleep sleep sleep and eat eat eat! I got my girl when she was already a year, and she's the same that she was when I went to pick her out at the shelter, very affectionate, she comes when you call, and really is quite the social butterfly. When I have people come round, she's all over them, while my boy prefers to go hide out upstairs. Of course, you will love your pet, no matter how they turn out, but if you want a playful kitty, pick an older one that already displays affection and plays with you. Also, cats are more affectionate if they are spayed/neutered, so please make sure that's taken care of. Also, a kitty that stays indoors is WAY more affectionate and playful, as their whole life revolves around you. You must just make sure you have enough time to spend with your new pet!
Have a great time whatever you choose.

You will regret not getting the cat spayed or neutered. Many male cats, once they reach sexual maturity will start spraying and the smell is awful and very hard to get out. Female cats go into heat often and cry loudly. The risk for cancer is 70% higher in unspayed cats.
It is real hard to tell what a kitten will be as an adult. You are better off getting a 1-2 year old cat that has already developed it's personality. Plus..an older cat will most likely be spayed or neutered already.

It isn't entirely the BREED of cat, but how you raise the cat. All cats have their own personality, believe me, I've had hundreds over the years. (I do provide a foster home for many animals, until they find their forever home, and I am an AVID cat lover.)
If you get a chance to pick a kitten out of a litter... you should go for the one who seems to be the most alert, the one most interested in you. Then, while that kitten is growing up, be sure to offer her/him lots of play time, good food, and lots of petting and social time.
Most cats who are raised to be social will really be friendly and social pets. They are quite smart.
In regards to the person who said that male/female doesn't matter... i STRONGLY disagree. In my experience (which is quite a bit) male cats are always friendlier and more social than females. Female cats tend to be skittish and shy. Not all of them, of course, but it seems to be a trend in female kitties.
Spaying and neutering only slightly affects the degree of "friendliness"... most cats become calmer and more social after being altered. It also cuts back on the odds of your cat trying to get out (believe me, an unaltered cat will drive you CRAZY trying to get out while in heat)... and, they will be less likely to spray. Contrary to popular belief, male AND female cats do spray. And it stinks. Awful.. lol.
Good luck finding a nice kitty. :)

To be honest with you, you look like you are looking for car, not for living creature. You should think if you want that cat after all. Cats have mind of their own, they have personalities etc. Your cat won't be just the way you want it, that's for sure. So think about it. Cats are perfect companions, but you have to accept them the way they are. With all the conditions you mentioned.... it doesn't sound right.
