I love this question. Ok, what are good subs you ask? That all depends on your budget to tell you the truth. Just like cars, you have makes, and models, and in this case you also have sizes. Take JL audio subs for example. The aker is JL audio, but then you have models: T1, W0, W3v3, W6v2, W7(which is what I own) etc. And within those models, you have different sizes. JL makes an 8, 10 (which is the size of mine), 12, and 13.5. I think they came out with more, but being here in Afghanistan, I'm kinda behind the power curve. Now, some people buy one type of speaker nd stick with it, while other buy a brand, not like it and constantly change, it's all in what you want out of your system. What do I mean by that? Again, using JL audio as the example, if you want something that sounds nice, and has a lil base because you have children, a W0-W3 will be the way to go, but small in size. The base may be too much for the children. If you are looking for competition, thats when you go for the higher models (W6-W7). Now in most cases, the higher the number, the "better" the sub. Although larger subs produce more base (15+), a smaller sub (10-12) have a better range, meaning they can different base ranges (low deep base, high pitch base etc.). They are more versitile. Now, after yu know what you want, you have to know what size to get, because 2x15" subs may not fit in your car, yea it may look cool if they do, but dont do it. You need space for sound. Im not even going in the ported and non ported boxes, all depends on set up. Now, you have to ensure you get the right amp, for i can not stand it when people buy 2x15", and say they have a 2000 watt amp. Now amps are just as confusing as subs. They come with multiple channels (powers more than one thing), mono channel , all kinds of stuff. Know the limitations of the sub before you buy the amp cause you can get a sub that is only 500 watts, but at 2-3 oms, which is alot (the lower the oms, the more power they have). And please, please do not get subs and amps without upgrading your mids and highs. I can not stand nothing more than a car rollin down the strip, base pounding the hell out of the stores, but I can make out what song it is cause the base is drowning it out. And I have not even talked about the head unit. Its all on you man, and mainly its about what you want to get out of it, and what you are willing to spend. I have a JL audio 10"W7, hooked to a 500/1 amp. That amp was made to go with that sub. I have the JL VR series coaxial component system hooked to the 300/4 amp, again which was made for that system. You see where I am going ith this. Mix matching makes and models, in my opinion, is the wrong way to go. You can get a low level sub, but i guarantee, if you get the amp that is made for that particular sub, it will sound better than some high priced system. The head unit, its all in the features. What do you want it to do. Mine personally cost $600, but I compete in car shows. Total I paid $5,000+ on mine, but everything matches everything else. In closing, its what you want out of the system-whether it is for competition, or just daily driving with the kids, do not let anyone sucker you into buying something you dont want. Now in short, to answer your question, I feel JL audio makes the best sub. Ill tell you what, no lie, my buddy have a 1997, eagle talon TSI with 3x15" JBL subs (not sure on make) and 3x1000 watt amps. I have a 2005 honda civic ex SE, and he tells me all the time he wishes he had taken more time shopping, pricing and researching his system. Dont get me wrong, it pounds, but they are still 2 completely different sounds. But over all, it's on your budget (the main factor), and what you want out of your system and its purpose.
