I read in Oxygen magazine, and I quote "There is not a study in existence to support this claim." I also read that you are probably losing water weight if the scale drops by a pound in a day. It takes a deficit of 3500 calories to lose a pound of fat.

I'm so very much not a nutritional or weight-loss or athletic expert of any sort. My response is just grasping at straws, I admit.
That said...
It seems to me likely that when you first start working out you are not that likely to increase you water intake to a significant degree. You simply don't realise how much more water you should be taking in. So you're breathing harder and sweating more and both of these release far more water from your body.
It may even affect your metabolism in such a way as to increase your urine production. I don't know, though. That may be all in my imagination.
It would also seem to me that as your body becomes accustomed to this you will be thirstier and drink more water and naturally level out the water you take in to meet or come close to the water you expel.
There's probably more to it, though, I'm sure.

I have actually been reading alot about this myself. It is true that you tend to lose water weight at first. You're expending energy and losing water when you sweat. However, as muscles start to develop, your muscles will actually hold onto that water to use it for energy and repair. Yes, it is more of a caveman response. The body isn't receiving as many calories, so it holds on to whatever it can. Don't be discouraged, though, if you gradually bring exercise into your diet, the pounds will start to drop. Don't weigh yourself for four weeks after you start your diet, it will help you keep on target and get through those flucuations in your weight. If you haven't lost any weight after that four weeks, increase your exercise. IT WORKS! I have lost 10 pounds in 4 weeks.

It is not the DIET that gives you the water weight loss but the "this diet works the best with a exercise routine" bit. The body retain water and keep itself hydrated. This is probably due to the "caveman/woman" part of the brain that still exist where the body don't know when again it will get/find water. This extra weight is lost quickly to help the body "save energy" during exercising (less weigh, less energy used)
And guess what - stop to diet/exercise - gain the water weight and you are "off target" again.

The only way to be sure what you are losing is to get a device that measures body fat percentage and water percentage. This comes in hand held devices and also in scales. These devices can be found at walmart. They measure these numbers by sending electrical pulses through your body. These pulses travel through fat, water, muscles, and bones at different speeds, so this is a very accurate examination of a person's personal health. However, these numbers could be affected by the state a person is in, depending on if you are dehydrated, intoxicated, amount of caffeine consumed, or if you have recently eaten a large meal. Anyways, good luck!

Only pop nutrition suggests that it is water weight. It is fat loss only change in diet has a quick effect that drops after initial period the slowing of weight loss causes people to invent retarded logic to justify this decrease in results.
