A Spanish missionary used the text of John to denounce the poor treatment of the native population in 1511. I don't know much about the text, though, so I'm not sure how he used it. Can anyone help me out with some info on John the Baptist?

John the Babtist was a prophet that God chose to begin the ministry of Jesus Christ. John's job was to warn people that Jesus was on his way and to help them repent and prepare for his arrival and ministry. Jesus would usher in a new era of Christianity. (most people were still practicing the law of Moses which would be done away with when Jesus returned) We christians today, know Jesus and accept his teachings but in John the Baptist's day, no one knew Jesus yet...so John the Baptist was the voice crying in the wilderness ( he lived in the desert...) helping people repent for the comming of Jesus.... Hope this helped and was not too confusing.

John the Baptist was Jesus' cousin. He was beheaded by Herod at the request of the daughter of Herodias. See Matthew chapter 6.
