They bleed every time I brush my teeth, but only on my upper right side, nowhere else. They're also sore constantly, and feel like they could be swollen. I do have a cavity on that side I have to get filled soon - could that be the cause or is it something else? It hurts pretty badly - sore to the touch as well as a general dull ache.

It sounds like you just need to have your teeth cleaned. Or at least get them checked out. The bleeding has to start somewhere when your gums start to "go bad," so it just started on the upper right for you. Give it a couple more weeks and it will be everywhere...

You may very well have an infection, and you need to go see a dentist immediately. If you are brushing more than twice a day STOP brushing so much until you see your dentist. Maintain brushing twice a day, use Listerine, and get some Orajel. If you keep waiting to get the cavity fixed you will likely end up needing a root canal or extraction, and you can get an ear infection or a serious infection of the blood which can be fatal.

ARE YOU RIGHT-HANDED AND ARE YOU USING A MEDIUM OR FIRM TOOTHBRUSH?
WHEN YOU'RE RIGHT HANDED YOU TEND TO PUT MORE PRESSURE AGAINST THE CHEEK SIDE OF THE GUMS. IF YOU ALSO USE A MED. OR FIRM BRUSH IS MUCH TOO HARD FOR THE GUMS.
HOW YOU HOLD THE BRUSH ALSO MAKES A DIFFERENCE. DON'T HOLD IT LIKE A BASEBALL BAT OR BROOM, BUT JUST 3 FINGERS.
GO SEE A DENTIST FOR A PROPER DIAGNOSIS OF WHY YOUR GUMS BLEED IN THE UPPER RIGHT.

Mine used to bleed cos i did no longer floss that area very often. yet after bleeding for some days it stopped :) in basic terms bear with it, after a week at maximum it would end. Bleeding gums are undesirable gums, ensure you floss and brush familiar!

you may need some deep cleaning in that area, sounds like some bacteria got trapped under the gumline. for after your appt., buy some amosan. it is at most drug stores.
