"...and wear sneakers and jeans no matter where they go when off-duty."

Ok, so what are you doing? Stalking a particular bunch of policemen??

I don't know what a person's occupation is if they are not wearing some kind of "identifying" uniform... or name-badge.. SO, how is it you know what "most" cops look like when they are off duty??

As far as haircuts and sideburns go, I'm usually looking at my hands while I'm getting a ticket... not doing a close inspection of the officer's haircut... much less sideburns... The officers I have known (parents of students) all had pretty normal haircuts... one or two of them even had a mustache...

I think you need a different hobby...

I can tell you that the "cop 'stache" is so prevalent because it's the only facial hair most officers are allowed to grow while they're in uniform. Nothing below or past the edges of the mouth.

That same uniform code covers the hair cuts and styles. Most agencies have policies regarding hair length. A lot also have policies against "trendy" hair styles. It probably doesn't help that law & order kind of guys tend to be a little conservative anyway.

I don't know about the "sneakers and jeans" part. I wear jeans, but rarely wear sneakers.

A large majority of cops have military experience. Many tend to have had strict conservative upbringings. Therefore, most have spent their entire life with short haircuts. Plus, most department policies would require the men to keep their hair trimmed to a particular length. As for what sort of clothing they wear off duty, I have never noticed a difference in what they wear and what my other friends wear. Maybe that's because in the Midwest, almost everyone wears sneakers and jeans for almost every occassion.

They cut their hair short for several reasons. It keeps the bad guys from yanking it out, it helps maintain a level of discipline, a lot of cops are ex-military and that's what they like. They dress in jeans and sneakers because they are probably carrying their weapon concealed. They do this because they have arrested a lot of bad guys. There is always a chance of coming across one of these while out on the town. They also wear boots and uniforms everyday and sneakers and jeans are just really comfortable.

Cops are bad fashion statements... period.

Most of us, are in uniform with a standardized haircut and dress policy during most of our days, so dressing well and looking 'not-like-a-cop' is low on the priority list.

We cut our hair short because when you are grappling with a suspect longer hair (that which you can hold on to) will be pulled out. This is usually a personal preference and not policy with the exception of long hair, that which extends below the collar.

I don't wear sneakers, running shoes or boots are my foot wear when off duty, and yes I do wear jeans to all informal activities.

For my understanding, cops has lots of work to do (if they do work. JK) From where I live (Thailand) they are trained to be deciplin and obey the rules. Needless for them to care about their hairstyle. It's better for them to look almost exactly the same from head to toe. The only difference is their face. So they don't have to waste their time thinking about where and how to have their hair cut. They don't have to care about the look. just be good and don't break the rules. I don't know how to make it clearer. I think it's the culture of the profession. Every profession have one and being cops means having this kind of hairstyle. I guess.
