they keep their hearing longer, and they are over 10X less likely to have to use hearing aids by age 70. and they are a lot smarter, they recognize patterns better and most of the time are better at math. most of the time they get better grades in school, and they are often able to graduate early.
also it develops a musical sense and kids who listen to classical music can play instruments better than those who don't.

after reading the other answers I have to say that I completely agree with the first answer.

It is known to increase the neural connections in the brain, and also to increase a child's aptitude with math.

My daughter has had calm classical, celtic, and other instrumental music played in her room since she was born. She just turned 2 years old and is several months ahead of her age with verbal communication, and evenness of temper. She also shows more interest in music than most children her age. She sings and dances, and enjoys experimenting with instruments. This could be due to listening to music, our parenting style, her genes, the fact that she has a stay at home parent, or a combination of all these things. The way I see it, listening to classical music isnt going to hurt her, and if it helps her, GREAT! If not, nothing lost.

My son really likes Bach. He's 3. He listens to it before he goes to sleep. I'm not sure if it's doing him any good, but he's identifying different types of music now and informed me that "there are no drums in Bach". Other than being smarter...I don't know. More relaxed?

it's calming and thought provoking to start. it's not really a matter of making you smarter. what it does, i feel, is allow your mind to open up, expand, enabling the listener to be more accepting of the world around them. school age kids seem better able to comprehend their lessons, leading to better grades. it is just a theory but i subscribe to it. i believe there have been studies done about it. you can probably find them on line.

The complex strata of the compositions helps them hear and differentiate sounds by tuning their ears instead of having to have the rest of the world blocked out. It gives them a wealth of music in their memories to judge, evaluate and compare the rest of music in the world to. Mostly its really good music and lots of fun.

It's actually supposed to help with the way they think. Classical music is created in patterns and it helps your brain comprehend patterns more readily which is useful in critical thinking.

mom and dad raised 5 very independent kids, we all feel very intelligent and above the crowd. we feel cultured and fortunate. My dad was a policeman and mom stayed at home..but we felt as if we had come from royalty. We had great manners and respected our elders. But then mom had a schedule and the classical went on at a certain time and off at an appointed time.

I never actually did it because I really don't see how that does anything. It seems as though our intelligence is actually being mocked. Think about it, one day eggs are great for you, another they are bad, etc.. My daughter is a straight a-b student and she's never listened to classical a day of her life.
