They are not 'put in.' Dreading hair, or locing (pronounced locking) hair is a process in which the hair is rolled or 'twisted' into individual strands or locs. The texture of the hair is what determines how long it takes before the hair starts to bond (fuse). the silkier the natural hair texture, the longer the process. The coarser the hair, the quicker. It's the year 2007 so anything can be done in the name of fashion/cosmetics. However, there is a confidence and a great feeling of pride that comes from growing your locs the natural way (growing out or cutting out all chemically processed hair before starting the locing process). In the Summer 2006 issue of Vibe Vixen Magazine (page 52), I learned that cutting locs are not the only way to change the hairstyle. It is a time consuming process, but they can be combed out when no longer desired. Wish I'd known that before I cut down to an 15 years of locs that were past my waist. Understand that it requires a certain commitment to do it right. Hope this helps.

You don't manage them. That's the point. You leave your hair alone and let it grow. It gets dirty enough to start matting which give it that distinctive look. You will most likely have to cut them out, sometimes almost to the scalp.
