Not really looking to compete or anything like that I just want to learn some kind of good self defence/fighting techniques. Boxing, Karate etc somthing to those effects. Somthing where just your average joe can join not really knowing anything to start with. Thanks.

Ju-Jitsu for one to one fighting. Hands down it is the best formalized well known system anywhere - no question about it, the Brazilian variety especially.
You should incorporate Kickboxing if you are concerned about multiple attackers.

I'd suggest looking in the phone book for any okinowan style of martial arts. The Korean styles are pretty, but its not street fighting - its more of a sport. Chinese is too much of a soft flowy style - I believe Okinowan offers the best of both worlds - a hard-soft style with practical street smarts, and not a lot of fancy schmancy stuff.

umm, boxing, karate, something to those effects? i think u answered your own question, lol. but seriously, karate is great because you will learn techniques but also about discipline, working out and peacefulness (if its a good instructor). try tae kwon do. kick boxing always sounded fun to me too.

start up off with activities to get him to stretch alot, or likely kickboxing, then flow onto MMA and Thai Boxing (Muay Thai) because if he learns karate or tae kwan do you likely understand that its a activity for wusses, because it in reality bargains with attempting to shelter your self, yet bullies will continuously outpower him, to manage to furnish him ability he needs the activities I informed you about
