What does it feel like being Canadian? Well to start with it feels safe. I'm not afraid to tell anyone in the world that I'm Canadian. We love people and people love us. We don't try to rule the world but we're there if someone needs help.
It feels warm. Canadians are not the chest pounding sort but inside....our hearts swell with pride for this beautiful land. It's a big country from the stark, rugged, beautiful shores of Newfoundland and it's warm, inviting people to the Pacific coast.....the majesty of the Rockie Mountains and the modern, cosmopolitan melting pot that is Vancouver.
It feels peacfull. Travel to the lakes and wilderness of northern Ontario and feel nature envelope you. Listen to the call of the loon and in the fall feel the crunch of fallen leaves and stand in awe of the reds, golds and greens that is the stuff of a Canadian autumn.
It feels free. Canadians can disagree with their politicians vocally and even create comedic television shows specificly aimed at targeting those in power. We can ralley a cause and form protests and have no fear of being thrown in jail. We can practice whatever religion we choose and can adopt whatever lifestyle that suits us. We can be black, brown, yellow, red or white and still live for the most part in a friendly, accepting society. We can get sick and know that the major portion of our healthcare costs will be paid for. We can get old and know that there will be someone there to care for us.
What does it feel like to be Canadian? It's the best feeling in the world. I feel proud and grateful that I am a part of this magnificent country. I only wish everyone could be.

A Canadian is basically an unarmed American, but with health care. We have the same needs, the same concerns, and get itches in the same places, except we try to scratch those out sight of the public eye.

Most of Canada is just as patriotic as Americans except for Quebec, where 49.6% of us want to stay part of Canada and 49.2% want to leave. We can't fly a Canada flag because the separatists want to burn it. We can't fly the Fleur de Lys because nationalists will slash our tires.

No no no. I'm kidding by the way. Don't everyone get their panties in an uproar. Actually, we are all mainly interested in having a good time...The beer helps :-)

You feel all warm and tingly inside, but all cold and tingly on the outside. It's a sense of contradiction, of being almost but fortunately not quite American, of curiosity about who will be the next famous Gordon Sinclair, of pride when your countrymen win the Stanley Cup mixed with the quiet desolation that comes from knowing they won it for a city that calls it "ice" hockey. And at this special time of year, it's a feeling of joy and hope, knowing that maybe just maybe this will be the year you or someone whose kid goes to your kid's school and doesn't know anything about anything will finally Roll up the Rim to Win!
