You might consider contacting your local volunteer center for some support with your project.

I manage a tutoring program at the local library, lead a teen group that enhances the visitor experience at the local museum, work on projects at the local food bank, children's center, etc.

Since volunteer centers have a wide variety of resources and connectings with local non-profit agencies, they are an invaluable resource to help you as you get started on your project. They can also provide you with a one-time or short term project, or refer you to other agencies for long-term project opportunities.

Here are some links to help you find your volunteer center:

Good luck!

Usually churches will have projects you can do. Sometimes you can volunteer at care homes or hospitals to visit people or kids who don't have many visitors. If you truly want to get some personal satisfaction from your service, and not just get 'points' from your school or p.o. or something, then choose something you'd enjoy doing. Also, you can volunteer at the boys and girls clubs or at animal shelters. Most non-profit organizations are able to give you some community service projects for you to do.

Do something that can give you skills with your overall career objective. Community service counts as experience that employers look for in job applicants. I myself am involved with Habitat for Humanity. We help build houses for needy families. Just to give you an idea of how it relates to my career objective: I'm majoring in management and I serve as V.P. of our campus chapter of Habitat. I've organized fundraisers and coordinated our membership recruitment. If you want to go into the medical field, try volunteering with American Red Cross. If you want to work with kids, try volunteering at an after-school program, being a mentor, or with the YMCA. Just try to get relevant experience and skills that will help you later on while you're now in the process of helping others.
