The effects of coming down are:
Being miserable for @ least the first 72 hours
Cold and Achey
Sweating
Inability to sit still
Vommiting
Diarehia
Insomnia
Leg Jerks (ie Kicking the Habit)
Mood Swings
the list goes on, these are some of the more sevre, common ones. The good news, if she is just detoxing from heroin, none of these symptoms are fatal. Althought she may feel like she's dying, she isn't. If other drugs are involved (xanax, alcohol, and some others) I recommend professional detox because withdraws from these things are dangerous and potentially fatal.

As far as "a few weeks to be normal" that is true. There is actually a medical diagnosis called PAWS (post acute withdraw syndrome) that can have effects up to a year. Some of these are: restlessness and mood swings, but there are others.

For her to feel "normal" it can vary, for me it took about a month. Oh yeah, how did I know all this? I am not a doctor, this is just my personal experience. I have withdrawn from numerous drugs, but Heroin was my long time friend/enemy.

Recovery? One day @ a time. There is no magic words, no cure, no "don't do that again", it is a life long process. I have a little over 2 years clean from all mood or mind altering substances, and my journey is just beginning.

Hope this helps.

Your friend doesn't sound like she's ready yet.

Recovery is a lifelong process. You don't go in for a few weeks and come out all better. Especially not if she's injecting something like Heroin.

So it's not about recovering from needles or needle use. It's about recovering from addiction, addiction to a particular drug, the problems it's created, and the issues that caused her to start using in the first place.

She needs to be the one asking the questions, in a chair, at a treatment center.
