I have a couple for you.
PINNACLE STUDIO is the cheaper of the two, and in a nutshell is fairly easy to learn for the end user. The program comes with quite a few good transitions and more can be added.
My favorite, and the more expensive of the two is Sony VEGAS. This is harder for the end user to learn, but has MANY extras included. So many, in fact, that I haven't even tried them all. One thing I'd LOVE to try (and that I've read is included) is the option for using a "green screen" behind someone like they do for weather reporting on newscasts. Another nice feature that I HAVE used is the ability to "zoom in" anywhere onto a photo you like, making the image appear to be moving instead of just a stagnant photo being added to your final "show". You can find a 30 day trial of this program on Sony's website if you want to play with it for awhile. It is also so robust that it can output/render in just about any video format you might want your show to be in. I've taken many larger MPGs, for example, and rendered them down to a smaller WMV format so they were small enough to attach and send via email.
Hope these two suggestions help.

Windows movie maker is a generic program that does very basic functions. You will get what you pay for, but if you've used microsoft this long, you probably don't need all of the bells and whistles anyway. There are several different versions of Sony Vegas available from 35 bucks or so.. up to 400. Adobe premiere is pretty good, but doesn't have as much to offer in the special effects area and has a pretty high learning curve. When shopping, make sure a dvd tutorial is included. This will help greatly! Plan on spending several days getting the feel for the program. I've used a lot of different programs, I'd go with Sony. Hope this helps!

My favorite video editor is Sony Vegas. i use it alongside Sony Sound Forge, but you dont need to worry about that. I like Vegas because it gives you a lot of control, without being too complicated.

You can get it for around $90.
