I know it's possible you could get in trouble but does any one actually get fined or jail time? A penalty is only as good as it's enforcement.

A failure to appear charge goes on your record but they do not actively seek you out to arrest you. What happens is like this: one day years from now, you are pulled over for a traffic violation and the police runs your name and license. At that point, she or he sees the failure to appear on your record then arrest you.

The hard part is that it is difficult to get bonded when you have a failure to appear on your record.

You also have the option of going to the magistrates office and paying the fine to have it removed.

There is no such thing as a little fine in San francisco. Parking in a Bus Stop is worth almost $500.
My wife and I each had jury duty this year. All we had to do was log on and make sure we weren't called every day. Neither of us got called.

Or, if you have moved outside of San Francisco County before you got their notice, let them know. Reverse happened to me, I got a jury duty notice from Berserkely, CA but had taken up residence in San Francisco before I got the notice and was excused, especially backed up by the fact my past two employers had San Francisco addresses. If this is not your circumstance, you can get excused from jury duty by stating, " you could not not possibly be counted as an objective juror as your firmly believe anyone accused of such a crime must be guilty" and therefore making it impossible for you to deliver an objective opinion. If this doesn't work for you,
declare yourself a racist, a bigot or Republican and say you must recuse yourself on the grounds that you cannot come to an unbiased conclusion." You will be excused and thanked for your honesty. Hardship claims such as, "I can't afford it," "My boss wont let me off," or "No hablo Ingles" are futile as they will contact the IRS, call your boss or provide a translator.

Don't know about SF, but failure to show up for Jury Duty is not a good thing. If you missed your date, I would call immediately and explain that you made a mistake and would like to get rescheduled. Waiting only makes the problem get bigger.

I believe the court system will issue a "bench warrant" for your arrest.Normally they will not send someone to enforce it,they will simply wait until you get pulled over for a traffic violation, run your ID and when they see you have a bench warrant they will arrest you on the spot. If you are driving alone, they will tow your car,put it in storage and you will have to pay the storage fee's as well as the bail to get out of jail. You can avoid this hassle by calling the court system and ask for assistance on how to have your name removed from jury duty. You may have to go to the office, but you should do something because it is designed to spiral out of proportion.

It's legal. They can sentence you to jail time plus a hefty fine up to $1500.00 I believe, and then still compell you to serve in the jury pool. Just go. It isn't that big a deal.
