I can't figure it out, I know this is a dumb question, but it has never come up before. I am learning spanish and I have to get the written words right. Thanks for any help!

You are right to want to write the words properly as, in Spanish, the accents not only affect pronunciation but can also affect meaning: eg: hablo - I speak: - habló - he spoke.

If you are using a Windows keyboard, writing accents in Spanish is fairly easy:

The most direct way to do it is to hold down ctrl+alt as you type the vowel:
á, é, í, ó, ú: so: púrpura:

Sometimes you may find the keyboard has been adapted so that the above system doesn't work, then you have 2 alternative methods:

Again if you are using Windows, you should find that one of the System tools in the accessories section in your list of programs is a Character Map: use this to find any letter you want complete with accents.

Altewrnatively: the following codes are good for Spanish:

á - alt+0224
é - alt+0233
í - alt+0237
ó - alt+0243
ú - alt+0250

Other useful combinations for typing Spanish:

ñ - alt+0241
¿ - alt+0191
¡ - alt+0161

Hope this helps

Go to your START button then go to All Programs > Accessories > System Tools Character Map. It says to get that character to press the Alt key while typing 0218 which produces Ú for caps or Alt 0249 to get ù.
