Has scientific knowledge ever caused you to question your faith?

Do you say anything when a science teacher asserts something that conflicts with your beliefs?

Personal story:
A while back, I wrote a mesage to my science professor questioning the assertion made in the textbook that birds evolved from reptiles. If you are familiar with the Bible, you know that it states that everything produces after its own kind. He never responded to my e-mail. Did I overstep my boundaries?

Do you believe that scientific knowledge is beneficial to mankind? If so, why? If not, why not?

What if Biblical Knowlege existed, but no Scientific Knowledge existed? Conversely, what if Scientific Knowledge existed, but no Biblical Knowledge existed?

"Do you believe that scientific knowledge is beneficial to mankind?"

Of course it is and true science along with true religion don't conflict.

Yes scientific knowledge has made me question my faith, but I probably would have done that anyway.
I think if you don't figure out why you believe what you believe then you truly are ignorant.
Questioning things makes you acquire knowledge and looking into what science had to say about the universe and earth eventually strengthened my faith.

EDIT
Tucking Fypos
"The world would still be flat, the flat land mass that is the centre of the universe"

Isaiah 40:22
"It is he who sits above the CIRCLE of the earth......"

Well before man figured that out. Not to mention if you do some research the Churches beliefs about the earth being the center of the universe and it being flat came from Greek philosophers. Even Galileo defended the bible saying it didn't support there beliefs.

Job 26:7
" He stretches out the north over empty space and hangs the earth on NOTHING."

Although the bible and evolution are irreconcilable given that the bible clearly states that animals can only give birth to there own kind.

I don't think scientific 'knowledge' has ever -really- conflicted with my beliefs, if it has, it has never made me question my faith. No, there were/are many other things that make me question my faith. The more you think and search, the more conflicts you find. The Bible doesn't give you a way out. It says you have to believe everything in it. You have to accept it all as true out of faith (??) cause you can't prove anything.

Never have I trusted science to answer the question of my faith,in the fact of where I came from,or why I am here. I know for a fact that no scientist will ever put the Lord on trial or haul him into a court room,He will and can defend himself,I will stand up for my belief in him and of him and for him because he is the GREAT I AM. To me there is no what ifs. We all have the freedom of speach and if I had a teacher or any one else present to me anything that went against what I believe I would faithfully answer. Do I believe science has a place? Of course I do,but in the great debate of rather God is who he is and the word of God true,No I don't. You know when I read the book of Job in the old testament, when God talked to Job,, that was enough for me!!

I haven't had this "conflict" problem because I understand the shortcomings of belief vs fact. You are apparently deficient in that area.

Your science prof. was right to ignore your e-mail... it was to ignorant to deserve a response.

As to your "What if" questions: If there was only religion to depend on, the entire world would be as stupid as you appear to be here. Without science, mankind would still be digging for grubs at lunch time and sucking water out of stagnant ponds to quench their thirst afterward.

Join the world of the educated. You appear to be capable of writing a decent sentence, now read a few from something other than a "Holy Book" and you ought to be okay in a few years. Eat some DAMN fruit from the tree of REAL knowledge and get your dumbass out of Eden... you're living in a dream world.

Well, no. I was brought up a Hindu. My knowledge of God din't include what all he created and in what order. He was just the creator of everything. So, it never clashed with my beliefs.
As I read more and more and the more I thought about it all, I came to a conclusion that God is something we came up with for a lot of reasons and I am not really free enough to elaborate at the moment.
But don't worry, you will find all this gets easier soon enough and I don't think you overstepped your boundaries by emailing your prof.

There is no such thing as "biblical knowledge", the book is fiction. That birds evolved from reptiles is established science. If you don't think that scientific knowledge is beneficial, you may as well go live in a cave and eat rats; how do you suppose that all the conveniences of modern life happened? No god had anything to do with a single one of them: they are all products of science.

no scientific knowledge confirms faith, a lot of things that science has proven is very true, but god isn't going to tell how his work is done. he's only going to tell ya what ya need to know and that's where faith comes in. mankind isn't ready for some knowledge because for everything that is invented for good somebody's going to use it otherwise. i think we were given the intellect to make choices, and it's the choices that we'll have to live by. remember knowledge is only as good those choices

What if Biblical Knowlege existed, but no Scientific Knowledge existed?

The world would still be flat, the flat land mass that is the centre of the universe. Pi would still equal 3, and we'd all think the earth was 13,000 years old. We wouldn't know about the dinosaurs, or about Pangea. We would think God was mad everytime there was an earthquake or flood.

etc. etc.

But all in all you know what made me question my faith? The Bible.

Humans would be in terrible shape if either God or Science were removed from us.

Biblical knowledge serves well to help us develop to develop character and find purpose. Science lets us stretch our creativity, understand the world around us and shape it to our comfort and benefit.

God gave us minds capable of the knowledge of science and logic. I think he expects us to use the tools we are given.

-------------------------------------------
If you look at the OT symbolically you will actually find comfort in comparison to science. Consider looking at many of those stories as symbolic they were given to people much less advanced in scientific knowledge that we are today. They were given for the purpose of teaching and protecting and leading these people to a relation ship with their creator.

These people could by no means understand the vastness and diverseness of the universe. What was important was that there was a beginning, light and dark (perhaps the energy from a big bang even) became separate. Lower life forms appeared first then by God's plan more complicated ones. Finally then God rested as the creature he developed became mindful of him. Unfortunately even though they were mindful of him, they did not choose to submit completely as they wanted to rule themselves, and so it continues today.

Consider this - that God may use science to reveal himself to those with open hearts and minds.

Faith and scientific knowledge are compatible if you don't try to use one to nit pick the other. The various species on earth have evolved and are continuing to evolve. Species have changed to adapt and species that didn't have died out. The bible says nothing about God made a dinosaur to be on earth forever.
