The phrase was placed on money, and proclaimed the National Motto in 1956 under Eisenhower's administration. It was during the height of the Cold War, to be considered a "slap in the face" to communism which was believed to be inherently atheistic in nature. This was during the time of McCarthy, and the "Red Scare" here in the US.

And yes, it is an insult to all of us in this country who do not believe in god. It will be removed someday. I am sure this will be at the dismay of many people, but they will get over it, and still use the money regardless. It is like people trying to boycott Walmart. It just doesn't work, as Walmart is too convenient for people. Money will still be used with, or without those words.

it means we all trust god. i dont like the way the sentence is put together it is kinda weak in structure... and i guess recently everyone been using it..and i see it on cars and every where...

this is free country... free speech.. the government can do whatever it feels like to ensure the safety of everyone in it...

it is all about the tolerations of different religions...

if it said "under mohammed we trust"
would you still think something different...
