It is made from trees, yeah.

The process is, as far as I know, as follows.

The trees are cut down and transported to a woodchipping mill. This process is, more often than not, incredibly destructive...but that's an entirely different matter!

The woodchipper turns whole trees into 50-cent sized pieces which are then "cooked", by adding a massive amount of water and other chemicals to release the cellulose fibres into a substance called "pulp". The pulp is then passed through a very large plant - the paper mill - where it is spread out onto plates in a very thin layer. It's then dried and made into very large rolls, which are then further processed dependant on their final use. If it's for office paper, the paper mill usually processes it further, adding bleach before it's rolled.

If it's off to be made into newspapers, a quantity of recycled paper and cardboard is added before it's rolled as the quality isn't required to be that great. Cardboard comes off even sooner and includes more recycled content.

The full roll is then transported directly to the place where the paper is made. If it's newsprint, the printer does the final cutting before it's printed. Office paper is usually cut within the mill, where it gets cut up into smaller and smaller units. You've no doubt seen "A4" office paper? That's a determination of it's sized based on the metric system: A1 is one square metre, A2 is 1/2 a sq. m., A4 is 1/4 square metre...etc. etc.

Hope this helps!
